Polar Bear Climbing - this Saturday

It's cold, but we don't care! Actually, it won't be that cold. The forecast calls for a high of 45 degrees, and many of the Great Falls routes are in the sun. So bring your gloves, wear layers, and come out to enjoy a day of climbing on real rock. This will be a relaxed day of top-roping. No outdoor experience necessary, but you will need your own harness, shoes, etc.
Details Meet at 10am at the climber's parking lot at Great Falls. After you enter the park, take the immediate right - the road winds down to a parking area that's closest to the climbs. We have 3 climbing ropes, so I'm setting the meetup limit to 10 people. The final limit will depend on the amount of gear we have. If you can bring gear, please say so! A standard top-rope setup at Great Falls requires a climbing rope,[masked]ft of static line or webbing, and 2 locking biners. Climbing ropes are usually the limiting factor, we have extras of the other stuff.
What to bring

  • Harness, climbing shoes, belay device

  • Layered clothing, gloves highly recommended (numb hands + belaying = bad)

  • Food and water - we'll be out until midafternoon. The snack bar at Great Falls will be closed.

  • If you have a climbing rope and/or anchor material, please bring it. Money No fee for our group, but it does cost $5 per car to enter the park. Disclaimer Goes for every meetup, but I'll state it here: We're not guides. We (the organizers) haven't vetted everyone's equipment or expertise. Ask questions and trust your own judgement. You are responsible for your own safety. Now that that's out of the way, come out and climb!

Yes, dogs are allowed in the park (leashed). I'm not sure if a dog could do all of the downclimbs, but at least one area (Aid Box) is accessible with just a walk.

What is the scramble like? Dog friendly?

At least one setup, possibly two. I've never done GF, and am happy to try it. Do you have a favorite climbing area at GF? (I recall there are a half dozen and each is a couple hundred yards apart. It might be nice to tell people which one we'll be at.)

Unfortunately, I'll be working that day.

BTW, which Sat? I know it states Dec 18, but "this Saturday" implies Dec 11.

I'd be up for climbing on Sat. How about Carderock? I have a rope and anchors. If not windy and sunny, mid-40's is fine. But if it's windy and overcast, it'll be pretty unpleasant.

It's not too cold to climb outside! Just put hand-warmers in your chalk bag and try to pick climbs that will have sun on them. Unfortunately, I can't make it, but if I were in MD, I'd be there!
