Little Stony Man in Shenandoah

Shenandoah is beautiful in the fall, and Little Stony Man is one of the best crags in the area. Come out for the day, or camp out and spend the weekend.

The Climbing

LSM is a tall cliff with great views and moderate routes. If you're looking to learn or refresh your trad climbing skills, this is the place. We'll probably end up dropping some top-ropes as well. There's a great free guidebook maintained by PATC. This is a good warmup for Seneca trips later in the fall.

Knowledge and Equipment

- Harness, shoes, etc

- Helmet mandatory, due to loose rock in this area.

- It's usually windy and 10 degrees cooler than in the DC area, so dress appropriately.

- Food, water, etc.

- You should be comfortable with top-rope climbing and belaying. If it's your first time outdoors, please let me know.

- If you've got a climbing rope, trad gear, etc - bring them! Please note what you can bring in your RSVP.

As usual, I'll start the group size at 4, and expand as we get more experienced climbers and gear. Bringing a rope and/or gear guarantees a spot. Max size is 12-15 people, depending on experience levels.

Please post a note in your RSVP if you plan to camp! It will be significantly cooler out there than in DC, so come prepared for overnight lows in the 40s.

We'll have to choose a campground that has sites available - there should be signs at the park entrance. My preferences are Big Meadows (12 miles from LSM, but probably full), Lewis Mountain (18 miles from LSM), or Mathews Arm (17 miles). You can see the campground details here:

Driving and Carpooling
We will meet at the Vienna metro station SOUTH parking lot at 8am Saturday. Look for me in a blue Civic. If you are not joining the carpool, please post a note in your RSVP.
Directions to the crag
In Shenandoah National Park, just south of mile 39 on Skyline drive. If you hit the Big Meadows area, you've gone too far. GPS:[masked], [masked]
It's about 90 minutes from the Vienna metro station.

There's no fee for our group, but expect to spend some money. There's a $15/car park entrance fee, campsites cost $15-20, and please give the drivers some gas money.

What's the situation with the carpool? I plan to drive to the metro station and then carpool. I vote for 8:30 am instead of 8 am :)

Is anyone else trying to get there by metro, but can't arrive by 8? If a few people can't make 8am, I'll push it back to 8:30.
