Outdoor climbing at Little Stony Man (along Skyline Drive)

With a forecast high of 71 degrees, it's climbing weather!!!! The cliffs at Little Stony Man are about 80 feet tall. The Potomac Mountain Club has a great guide.

The plan is to meet at the Vienna Metro station and then carpool for the 1.5 hour drive. Either meet at the Vienna Metro station at 8:30am or meet us at the trailhead parking lot at 10:15am. There's a $15/vehicle entrance fee for Skyline Drive, so carpooling is recommended. GPS coordinates for the trailhead are [masked], -78.36640. It's a small (10 car?) parking lot on the right just past mile marker 39 as you're heading south on Skyline Drive. There are driving directions in the guide linked above. If the trailhead parking lot is full, there's another much larger parking lot a little further down, but the approach hike is a bit longer. There's a trail map and directions from that parking lot at Hiking Upward.

This event is suitable for people who have never climbed outside before, but is not suitable for someone who has never rock climbed before. You should know how to belay someone on toprope and you will need to have your own climbing gear (shoes, harness, and helmet--if possible).

Please add a comment to your RSVP indicating whether you will be meeting the group at the Vienna Metro station or at the trailhead, if you need a ride, or if can give people a ride (and mention how many people you can take in your vehicle). Please also mention if you have a rope and/or anchor setup. If lots of people have gear, I'll up the RSVP limit.

As usual, bring food, water, climbing shoes, sturdy hiking shoes (sneakers are fine but no flip-flops or sandals), harness, and helmet (even a bike helmet is better than no helmet).

Hey everyone. Sorry I was feeling so crappy today but glad we had great weather and good climbing. I am feeling better now that I'm at home.

I found a black sweatshirt in my car. If the owner could email we we'll figure out how to get it back to you. --Adam

Everyone: don't worry about rides from Vienna. We'll sort it out there.

I can drive myself and 3 others from the Arlington area. I usually meet people at the Cosi in Rosslyn . Let me know if that works for anyone who wants to carpool!

Hey Lola. Meet me at Cosi on Sunday, at 8 and we will then drive to Vienna to meet up with everyone else. See you then!

Great, thank you, Matt! I'll see at 8.

I won't be going with the Meetup group, but I was planning on being at LSM anyway! Happy to help out the group if it works out. :)

I'm in a similar situation as lola. Never climbed outside but always wanted to. Is that okay?

Hi Adam, I never climbed outdoor before (but always wanted to try) - is it a deal breaker? If not, I'd love to join someone in carpooling.

I'll be meeting you at the metro.

I'll meet you there. I may camp on Saturday

Lindsay - I really can't say. Sunset is 5:12pm, but if we decide to stop for dinner, it could be after 8pm that we get back. If you're on a tight schedule, can you drive solo? When's the latest you'd want to leave? It's a bit trickier to set up the ropes at LSM than other places, so I expect it'll be *at least* an hour before we've got ropes set up.

OK. Thanks. I'll keep you posted on carpooling then.
