Climb/Camp Mazama

  • Jul 27, 2013 · 9:00 AM

Suggesting this trip to see who is interested in climbing and camping over in Mazama in the North Cascades. Looks to be great variety of climbing, single pitch sport of all ranges, and some great multi pitch routes. Heres a link to the online climbing guide.

http://www.goatsbeardmountainsupplies.com/climbingbeta.html

Pretty easy to get there, just head North on I-5 to Highway 20 east in Mt. Vernon. Head east on Highway 20 until you get to Mazama.

This looks to be the best camping place, It is first come first serve, so hopefully it isnt full. If any one else has a suggestion on where to stay, (other then a four star hotel!) Let me know.

My plan will be to head over Friday evening after work and be able to get climbing nice and early Saturday morning.

Stuff to Bring:
Essentials: Harness, shoes, water, food, sunblock. Helmets are recommended.
Would be nice to have: Rope, quickdrawers, ATC/grigri, personal anchor, cams, chalk, anchors, slings.

Camping: Tent, food, firewood, sleeping bag.

Spectacular weekend, a little bit of confusion finding everyone due to lack of cell coverage. But easily the most accessible outdoor climbing I have ever seen. A must do again. Great seeing you all there!

I am taking off at the crack of noon! Please do keep updates if the group moves. :) And should I worry about reserving a camping spot?

I am at Fun Rock right now...also swung by Ballard Campground and didn't see anyone. It also looked pretty full. Can someone call me if you see this? Thanks! [masked] 2475. I tried calling a few of you who posted your numbers on here, but no response.

Hi everyone, we are at fun rock today so everyone arriving later on Saturday can meet us there. Had to go with plan C for camping. Ballard campground about 8 miles west of mazama on lost river road. First campsite on the left, for any really late arrivals. There is no cell reception at the campsite or climbing area

Heading out now/see ya out there around 9:45/will go to the wall directly.

I'd like to head out Saturday morning, not super early, maybe 7ish, and camp out Saturday night, then head back Sunday afternoon. If anyone wants to carpool/share a campsite with me (I have a solo tent...I would imagine 2 solo tents can fit on a campsite? I don't know; I am kind of a camping noob, lol,) let me know! Especially if you would be up for some sight-seeing on the way there and/or back. Never been to the cascades before. It's supposed to be beautiful. :) I live in Bellevue, can drive or split gas money.

Hey Shabnam, thanks but I'm not feeling super well and would be more comfortable driving by myself so that I can go at my own pace. :)

Going to pull out at the last minute, unfortunately. The temperature is getting up there and given nobody is relying on me for a ride I might stick with my instincts and stay local this weekend. Have an awesome time! Give that prime rib some hell!

Hey Will - Sorry I just saw your posts. I thought you were leaving too early for me. I was planning on heading out this evening but when I noticed that most people were meeting earlier than I could meet I decided to just head up in the morning :( Sorry for the confusion.

      July 26, 2013

    • Will

That's OK! It's a bit hot for my tastes so this all works out. Will try again when its cooler

      July 26, 2013

  • Shabnam

I have decided it would be easier if I head out in the morning tomorrow. Please text me if you would like to carpool. [masked]-6096. I am flexible with the time I leave.

    Dan,
I'll join you. I need to go home to West Seattle to get my stuff but could head back to work and leave my car in the locked area there. But that is near the Stadiums. Traffic. Hmmm... Maybe I should come to you at 4:30 and try to get through downtown before 5?.... I'll call you. Anyone else - input?

    July 25, 2013

    • Will

I'll be leaving roughly that time, an hour earlier if I can manage. I messaged shabnam but she hasn't gotten back to me yet. I'll just head up alone I guess, and I'll bring my extra chairs and my big cooler and stuff. That way dan's car isn't overflowing. See you guys there!

      July 26, 2013

  • Krystal A.

I have to cancel...family visiting, little kids, etc. I'll be there next time though.

    July 26, 2013

  • Steph

    and yes on the multi-pitch!

    July 25, 2013

  • Dan

Hey everyone! I am leaving to head out tomorrow at 5 at the latest. I am flexible on the time by a half hour at least. I am driving a ford ranger tons of room for gear and one more passenger! I'll be camping Friday and Saturday. Anyone need a ride near that time text or call me at seven two four four nine three. One four. Two three. Hope someone there will be interested in some multi pitch trad! Bringing my rack! Thanks!!

    July 25, 2013

    • Dan

I live near sea tac airport but will meet where ever!

      July 25, 2013

  • Will

Still happy to bring someone on Friday afternoon. I unfortunately won't be able to cross the bridge west due to traffic! I can fit one or two with a squeeze (depending on gear/ropes), and I have a huge cooler to share. I have a 2+ tent I could share, too. In case anyone doesn't have a tent but would like to go.

    July 24, 2013

    • Dan

Hey Will! Trying to get out of work early Friday. If I can I'd definitely be interested in car pooling. I'll find tomorrow for sure and let you know

      July 24, 2013

  • Steph

I will be at my office ear the sbp at that time on Friday. We fit 4 plus gear in my car last weekend. If I'm not driving I'd prefer to leave my car at work if you don't mind swinging here. Where is everyone coming from?

    July 23, 2013

    • Shabnam

Will - What time were you thinking of heading out?

      July 23, 2013

    • Will

I'm leaving work at 2pm. I just want to miss the everett traffic if possible, but it seems unlikely.

      July 23, 2013

  • Will

I'll have my grill again, so feel free to bring grill friendly food to eat! Pretty sure I'll be going Friday and have room for one maybe two. Long solo drives are boring!

    2 · July 23, 2013

    • Lisa

I'll have two burner gas grill and jet boil for Sat night and likely a cast iron pan for cooking. Yey car camping hahahah.

      July 23, 2013

  • Steph

lisa is right. Google says 3.5 hrs. Maybe my memory is failing! :) maybe we can leave a bit later? Where to meet and when?

    July 23, 2013

  • Steph

I'd like to go Friday night too. Kind of a long drive so would love to carpool. It is around 5 hours if memory serves so if we want to get tents pitched by 9 we should leave around 4, meet at 3:30? I'll look at the info I have and make some suggestions on Mazama locations.

    July 23, 2013

    • Shabnam

Hi - Can I join your carpool. I can leave as early as 4:30pm on Friday.

      July 23, 2013

    • Lisa

Google Maps shows it being 3 1/2 hours driving from Seattle. Does that sound right, to people who have been there before? I'll leave likely 5:45 am Saturday.

      July 23, 2013

  • Lisa

I may leave Seattle early Saturday morning to get there. Any interest in camping out Saturday night?

    July 22, 2013

    • Mike S.

Yeah, I'm planning camping Friday night and Saturday, climb Saturday and Sunday

      July 22, 2013

    • Will

I'll be camping saturday night for sure if I'm there. Unsure if I'll head up friday night or not.

Check out http://www.visitokanogan.com/winthrop/camp-grounds.html#campgrounds for more camping options. I stayed at Ballard campground this past weekend. No water on site, but right by a stream, and super close to goat wall.

Keeping an eye on the weather. I'll say yes so we can get it frontpaged, though.
