Happy September, UXers!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our wearables workshop at New School downtown —we had a blast, and we hope you did too. We'd love to keep building relationships with organizations throughout the county, so if you have a business or space that you'd like to host a SandCHI meeting in, please let us know!

This month, we're excited to bring you an inside glimpse of design at Intuit, the makers of the industry-leading TurboTax financial software. Intuit takes design seriously these days, employing dozens of designers in San Diego under the umbrella of their TurboTax design wing, Studio 1040, run by director Rich Bessel. Rich has agreed to take us behind-the-scenes at Studio 1040, and will be sharing his thoughts on the process of creating design culture within an organization.

About Our Speaker

Rich Bessel is currently the Director of Studio 1040, which houses the Design Team for Intuit’s TurboTax. He leads a multi-disciplinary team of Interaction, Visual and Content Designers along with Design Prototypers. During his tenure, the team has grown significantly, moved into a brand new creative studio environment, and established a fun, creative environment.

Previous to Intuit, Rich worked at Nokia in Helsinki, Finland and Los Angeles, where he helped lead a Design-driven organizational movement across the company, and then moved onto working in Nokia’s Advanced Design group conceptualizing future location-based products and experiences.

Before Nokia, Rich has a holistic business background, working in Aerospace and Business Management Consulting. He has an MBA from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, combined with two technical degrees; a B.S. in Computer Science from Notre Dame, and an M.S. in Information Systems from Hawaii Pacific University. He also added a Design Fellowship from the California College of Arts.

We'll see you there!
