APRIL MEETUP
Once again, we are going to discuss a Brazilian movie. Watching a movie in Portuguese, besides being entertaining, can be a great way to learn the language and culture. Make sure you keep the original Portuguese soundtrack and turn-on English subtitles (or vice-versa).
Please watch the film before the meetup as we will be discussing it at our meeting.
Our April movie is "O Outro Lado da Rua" ("The Other Side of the Street"):
"A retired woman spends her days snooping everybody in her neighborhood as a police informant. When she thinks she sees a man murder a woman, but the death is seen as natural by the police, she decides to prove she was right."

NOTE: Our Meetup aims to create a supportive environment for those interested in practicing Portuguese. The sessions will be conducted primarily in Portuguese, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the language. While all language proficiency levels are welcome, please note that we are not a formal teaching group. We believe you will have a more enjoyable experience if you are open to trying your hand at speaking the language or simply listening to it.

MAY MEETUP
We are going to discuss a TV series in the Portuguese language. Watching a series in Portuguese, besides being entertaining, can be a great way to learn the language and culture. Make sure you keep the original Portuguese soundtrack and turn-on English subtitles (or vice-versa).
Please watch the series before the meetup as we will be discussing it at our meeting. We usually have a set of discussion questions to steer the conversation. It's ok if you were only able to watch part of the series since it is 10 episodes long. Please start watching now:)

Our MAY series is "Glória". Spies, lies and secrets flourish in Glória do Ribatejo, 1968, as a privileged Radio Free Europe engineer plays all the angles of Cold War Portugal.

Quick historical background: in 1968 Portugal was still under an authoritarian, fascist dictatorship. PIDE was the secret police for the "Salazar" regime; know to torture and kill dissidents. The regime was fighting wars in Africa, desperately trying to retain the Angola and Mozambique colonies. Portugal was allied with the US in the Cold War and had US controlled military bases in its territory.
