What we're about

Northern Lights Sailing Club's Meetup Group is for existing members of the Northern Lights Sailing Club. The purpose of the Meetup is to help our members organize sailing opportunities; locally, nationally, and internationally. In addition the Meetup is used to notify members of upcoming meetings and events.

All members can schedule and join our sailing and related events!

Northern Lights Sailing Club (NLSC) is the leading recreational sailing organization serving Minnesota and neighboring states. The club was founded in 1993 and has over 200 active members. Today our membership comprises seasoned sailors as well as those new to the sport. The common bond between members is a love for sailing and desire for more sailing opportunities. Many members are boat owners; many others are not. NLSC holds monthly meetings which may be strictly social gatherings or meetings that may cover a variety of topics to help members increase sailing skills, plan sailing trips, and simply network with others who have the same passion for sailing. Please check our website for a list of previous meeting topics and events.

To join our Meetup Group you need to be a member of Northern Lights Sailing Club. Not a member (yet)? No problem, we'd love to have you. Our club website contains additional information about the club including how to join. Visit us at: http://nlsc.org

Still not convinced that the Northern Lights Sailing Club is for you? Please feel free to be a guest at one of our meetings.

April 2019 Monthly Meeting

Chester Bird American Legion

Local historian Scott McGinnis will be on hand to give us the history of the Lake Minnetonka’s early vessels. Scott McGinnis shares a love of Lake Minnetonka and its vessels, as many area residents do. However, as a professional historian, he found a gap in historical information—namely in watercraft from the lake’s early days, he says, something he aims to remedy in his latest book, A Directory of Old Boats, Lake Minnetonka’s Historic Steamboats Sailboats and Launches. Out of the approximately 650 boats featured in the book, only four are still in existence. They are the Onawa, the Minnehaha, the Volante and Harriet. The Minnehaha is a 1906 steamboat that is currently docked in Excelsior. The Volante, an 1887 sailboat, and the 1909 gasoline launch Harriet are both privately owned. The presentation will include an overview of the history of boating on Lake Minnetonka. Scott will share countless interesting facts including when each boat was built, what it was named, who owned it and its fate. Guests are always welcome
