Gardens Info: In 1903 Henry Huntington purchased the San Marino Ranch, a working ranch with citrus groves, nut and fruit orchards, alfalfa crops, a small herd of cows, and poultry. His superintendent, William Hertrich, was instrumental in developing the various plant collections that comprise the foundation of the botanical gardens. The property—originally nearly 600 acres—today covers 207 acres, of which approximately 120 are landscaped and open to visitors. More than 14,000 different varieties of plants are showcased in more than a dozen principal garden areas. Forty gardeners, a curatorial staff of seven, and more than 100 volunteers maintain the botanical collections, provide interpretive programs for visitors, and propagate plants for special sales.

I guess, we can initially meet in the parking lot, since we should be pretty much all together, as we carpool up. I dont know the area, as for as where the buses are, or where the main ticket window is, since this is my first time, then we can make our way to the main ticket window and make sure everyone has arrived so we can get our discount.

For those who haven't been there, the pretty, peaceful walk out to the tempietto was well worth the trek to see it. That's the Huntingtons' final resting place. There are fun things to see & photograph in the children's garden and also the enclosed garden with huge orchids. The whole estate was stunning to me. See you next time.

Just in case anyone wasn't sure I called and asked:

    - Tripods are allowed on the grounds / gardens BUT
*not* in the gallerys (which is about par for most galleries).

    C yall.

I am bringing my beautiful daughter for her birthday. She lives in Escondido so I'll be picking her up and meeting you there at 10. I've never been, so cross another one off the bucket list!

Wouldn't you want to try to get there before 10am - for better parking and get in right at 10am?

    July 15, 2014

It opens at 10:30am, I forgot. So we will be good. It will be good to see you again :)

When is the group planning on returning?

    July 15, 2014

    • Sam W.

That will depend on the individual drivers. I was thinking, for those that want to, go to dinner after The Huntington. Some like to leave earlier and others like staying for dinner.

      July 15, 2014

  • Sam W.

Now I realized why I put the arrival time for 10am, because the place opens at 10:30am and closes at 4:30pm. So we will met at 7:30am at Grantville trolley Station, Sorry if you are getting several emails. My apologies. Forget the last post about arriving at 7am. 7:30 will be good.

    July 15, 2014

  • Sam W.

For those that are meeting at Grantville Trolley Station, I have change the time to 7am for carpooling and arrive about 9:30am at The Huntington Library. If you are driving up on your own, please leave a message here so I know. Thanks for all those updating their RSVP's.

This is a wonderful location. The Cactus Gardens are unparalleled. There are so many different things to capture, you could go with a hundred people, and shoot thousands of images, and no two images would even resemble each other. I love this place!

Gak! I should have paid attention to the comments more....sorry about not responding to a few of you...a year ago!!! Anyone interested in a weekday trip? I might not be able to do this particular weekend one. I don't want to take away from your gathering, Sam, but it looks like we may have enough for two events at the same place...different times? Idle happy to Bost a second one but transportation will need to happen by someone else at your end as I live in the opposite direction. Whatch'all thnk?

Ah, that's right. I am! I will check my calendar and propose a date or 2. The Huntington is worth many trips!

      1 · June 29, 2014

  • Gary S.

I would have joined in if this was scheduled for a weekday. Of course I understand how this would be a problem for many. I think the place will be teeming on Saturday. I'd rather go alone on a weekday for photography purposes. Good luck!

    1 · June 22, 2014

    • Diana

I would be up for meeting people who would prefer a weekday. Being it's summer break and I am a teacher, I have free time now. Perhaps put a shout out for interest in a weekday gathering?

      June 22, 2014

    • Dan C.

You and Gary can host if you just pick a date Diana. Of course with you up in Joshua Tree and Gary here in San Diego, you could plan to meet at the location at a designated time. Just a thought.

so bummed! this was the one weekend in July I have a commitment. Have fun!

    June 22, 2014

  • Diana

Looking forward to this. Unless I end up making travel plans around that time, I'm in! We should be there right when the gates open. Huntington Gardens gets very busy on the weekends.....

I will be meeting you all there as I am coming from a different direction.

I had asked about how to get the discount and they said that we don't have to arrive together, but have to be at the ticket window at the same time, lol. That would be arriving together in my book.

Hi All, this event needs a host for it to happen. That means someone has to step forward and pick a date and a time for it to occur. With 31 presently signed up, there must be someone who would want to act as the host. Pretty easy to do and I will help you to set it up. Contact me.

    June 18, 2014

    • Dan C.

Sam has stepped up to host this event. Please update your RSVP's to reflect any changes in status so there is an accurate head count. Thanks.

    June 15, 2013

    Hi Diana
I think I can made either one of those dates in June. I have been there several times and love that place! I agree about wandering around on your own adventures because there is so much to see. There are a couple of places to have lunch in the gardens. Weekdays are also good for me right now.

    June 14, 2013

  • Diana

Anyone interested in a weekday wander at the Gardens? I was thinking about soon - either this Sunday (Father's Day) or possibly June 20 (Thursday)...meeting up at 10AM when they open. Weather looks to be 80's this week.

    June 13, 2013

    • Robert O.

I want to go, but both the days you suggested I have events. I am available during the week more than the weekends.

      June 14, 2013

  • Sam W.

Checking my schedule, I might can host this either on June 29th or July 13th. I have never been there before, so hopefully someone can take the lead once we are there.

    June 13, 2013

    • Diana

It's easy to navigate around once you get in. People could easily wander off on their own adventures and then meet up at a certain time to share ideas, places, etc. If anyone is available on a weekday, it's less crowded then. Unfortunately, the gardens close at 4pm - regardless of season.

      June 13, 2013

    • Dan C.

I can make you both hosts if you'd like, then just coordinate on the date.

      June 14, 2013

  • Joy

    June or July?

    June 2, 2013

As a suggestion, Daytripper Tours is going to the Huntington on May 9. I can't go that day, but going with them would solve some group logistical issues in the future. Here is the website: http://www.daytrippertours.com/tour/the-huntington-library-art-collections-botanical-gardens/

Weekends are best for most people of course, but you will wait for hours to get in and the place will be jammed. Take my word for it!

Weekends are best for me. Either Dec. or Jan. is fine.

Another great idea. I have a membership and am always looking for a reason to make the 2 hr drive there. Anytime after Christmas would work for me - including a any week day between the 26th and Jan. 6
