Hellhole Canyon/Maidenhair Falls Hike, Anza Borrego DSP

What better way to celebrate Easter than a hike to Hellhole Canyon? This isn't the Hellhole Canyon near Valley Center, but rather the one in Anza Borrego DSP. So while it may be drizzling in San Diego, the forecast calls for sunny skies and a high near 80. The driving time to get there is about 1.5 hours each way (about 80 miles) but it is well worth it. Not only will desert flora a fauna abound in all its springtime glory (wildflowers, blooming cactus, fan palm, cottonwood and sycamore, and possibly bighorn sheep), but the hike will terminate at a 25' foot waterfall, whose face is carpeted in a lush covering of maidenhair fern (hence the name Maidenhair Falls ).

We'll meet at the trolley station at 8:30, and carpool/caravan out by 8:45. With the price of
gas as it is, I'd encourage carpooling. For those of you in North County, you can meet us at Dudley's Bakery in Santa Ysabel at about 9:40 http://tinyurl.com/yq.... We should be back about 3:30- 4pm.

  • Bring: plenty of water, snack/lunch, sturdy footwear--boots highly recommended, a
walking pole is helpful, camera, small bills to chip in for gas, etc...
  • 2.5 miles each way
  • 1000 feet in elevation gain
  • Moderate/strenuous difficulty: the trail isn't well defined, and the hike entails lots of bouldering and bushwhacking--nothing technical, but tiring.
  • Pit toilets at trailhead
  • Sadly, dogs aren't allowed : (

Beautiful scenery and great company! It was probably 85, but there was a constant breeze to keep us cool. The cactus and wildflowers were blooming all over the place.

Hopefully I'll have better luck finding the Trolley station than I did the Mission Hills Visitor Center. See you Sunday!
