New Meetup: Corte Madera Mountain

Announcing a new Meetup for The San Diego Urban Exploration Meetup Group!

What: Corte Madera Mountain

When: Thursday, November 11,[masked]:45 AM

Where: Grantville Trolley Station
4510 Alvarado Canyon Rd
San Diego, CA 92120

No plans for Veteran's Day? Well then, why not join me on what (in my humble opinion) is the most scenic hike in San Diego County (I know, not urban exploring, but its a fantastic hike). The peak itself is a granitic dome, reminiscent of Half-Dome, and on our way to the top, we'll wend our way through oak woodland, pine forest and house sized boulders. The summit affords spectacular views of the Pine Creek Wilderness to the west, and Corte Madera Valley to the north, a pastoral, oak studded meadow, complete with small lake. If the day is clear, you can see Catalina, and the Sierra Juarez plateau in Baja.

We'll meet at the Trolley Station at 8:45 and be off no later than 9:00. If you miss the group (assuming anyone else shows given the short notice : ) or you live to the east, we'll reconvene at the Buckman Springs Exit, and you can meet us there at about 9:40.

I am cross posting this with a hiking meetup to get enough participants.

*Adventure pass is needed, but don't worry if you don't have time to pick one up. The ranger will simply stick an envelope on your car, and you mail in $5.00.
*Depending on the route we choose, the RT distance will be between 7 and 9 miles. I'm inclined to do the longer version, which skirts the rim of the valley, and will make for a loop.
*Elevation gain/loss: 1500' (we start at 3200', the summit is at 4700')
*4-5 hours hiking time including breaks and lunch at the summit. Driving time from Grantville about an hour 20 min each way.
*I'd rate this as moderate to strenuous for both human and dog. Make sure both of you are prepared physically.
*Bring at least 2 liters of water for yourself, and enough to satisfy your dog--there are no streams.
*Appropriate footware
*Snacks or lunch
*Layered clothing. I strongly recommend a jacket and perhaps gloves--it'll be chilly up top (60 in the valley, windy and 50 at the summit).
*Photos from previous hikes:
