We'll be hiking Tecolote Canyon from top to bottom, a distance of about seven miles. It'll be mostly downhill, but some climbing will be necessary where we leave the canyon in two places.
We'll meet at 9:30 AM at North Clairemont Recreation Center at 4421 Bannock Ave. in San Diego (Thomas 1248 F1, N[masked] W[masked]). It's in North Clairemont Community Park on Genesee Ave. about two blocks south of Clairemont Mesa Blvd.
Park in the parking lot next to the recreation center, or on a nearby street if the lot is full. The area is also served by MTS bus lines 41 and 44.
From there, we'll go south through the canyon along mostly narrow, partly shaded trails with a few rough spots. (Farther south the trails are mostly unshaded.)
When we reach Balboa Ave., we'll have to walk up to the intersection with Clairemont Dr. and use the pedestrian crosswalk there. We will NOT walk through the culvert! (See photograph below.)
Farther south, we'll have to walk on the streets (Mt. Acadia Blvd. and Bello Blvd.) again to avoid the Tecolote Canyon Golf Course, where hikers are not welcome (unless they carry golf clubs and pay the greens fee).
The last leg of the trail runs next to the golf course and then out into the level lower canyon. (See photograph below.)
We won't just turn around and walk all seven miles back to the starting point. We'll go out to Morena Blvd. and catch the number 105 MTS bus back to Clairemont. (The fare is $2.25; exact change is required.) It runs every half hour.
The bus will take us to the corner of Clairemont Dr. and Clairmont Mesa Blvd., right next to the Clairemont Square Shopping Center.
From there a level 0.9-mile walk will take us back to the starting point. Some of us may want to stop for lunch in the shopping center.
Wear good hiking shoes and suitable layered clothing and take water and a snack. Don't forget your bus fare!
