Land's End Hike - Sierra Singles and Hiking Section

Hike some of the most spectacular scenery in the Bay Area.  Our route traverses the S.F. side of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, including ocean bluffs, crashing surf, the Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Point, numerous historic military batteries, Baker’s Beach, Land’s End, and ending up at Sutro Heights Park, overlooking the Cliff House.  This one-way, approximately 6-7 mile hike feels wild and remote most of the way, but it’s just blocks away from our great metropolis.  Optional dinner following.  Muni back to cars or BART.

Directions:  BART to Montgomery Street station; walk one half block up Market St. to Third St. and catch the #30 Stockton bus on the corner. Get off at Broderick and Jefferson; walk one block north towards the bay to Marina and cross the street.  Walk west along the Marina and enter the Presidio.  Crissy Field Center will be on the right.

If driving, from east bay, follow Interstate 80 west across the Bay Bridge to San Francisco; take the Fremont/Folsom St. exit and stay in left lane of off ramp:  Turn left onto Fremont; right onto Howard; left onto The Embarcadero; turn left onto Bay St., just after Pier 31; Follow Bay around to the right, hugging the water and it will turn into Marina Blvd.  Stay in right lane as Marina Blvd. enters The Presidio; Crissy Field Center will be on the right; turn in when you see the East Beach/Crissy Field Center sign; continue down the driveway for parking.

ALERT! We will probably alter the route for the Land’s End hike. The trail in the Land’s End area is closed for construction. The work was supposed to be completed and the trail reopened in early January, but it’s still closed. The Park Service says there’s a small chance it could reopen Sunday morning, so we will continue to monitor its status. If it remains closed and if we were to hike to the same end point, we would spend most of the last third of the hike walking along roads. We will likely change the hike so that when we reach the SW corner of the Presidio, we will turn and retrace our steps, instead of continuing to Land’s End. Although we’d follow the same trails twice, the spectacular views of the ocean and the Golden Gate would be different, since we’d be seeing them from the opposite direction. It would be a little longer and a little more strenuous, but would take less time for those who drive to the hike -- no need to take two Muni bus lines to get back to the cars.

What time are you expecting the hike to be finished?
and, will it be easy to get back to our cars? Thanks!

We should finish the hike around 5 pm. To get back to Crissy Field by MUNI, there are two buses to take. We are planning on making a dinner stop near where we change buses, for those who are interested.
