This classic loop provides outstanding views of the Bay Area, the Great Central Valley and the distant Sierra Nevada, all unfolding as we circumambulate the Park's dominant peak via Deer Flat, Prospectors Gap, Devils Elbow and Oak Knoll. Spring wildflowers should be abundant. Allow 6 hours for this 8.5 mile hike with a total elevation gain of about 2100 feet. Steady relaxed pace with a 30-minute lunch and other rest breaks. Be prepared for mud and poison oak.
Cost: Park entrance fee $10.00 per vehicle
Bring: layered clothing, hat, sturdy hiking shoes, lunch and at least one liter of water
Restrictions: Park regulations prohibit alcoholic beverages
Directions: From Oakland take Hwy 24 East to Walnut Creek, take Ygnacio Valley Rd. exit, right on Ygnacio Valley Rd., right on Walnut Ave., right on Oak Grove Rd. and then immediate left on North Gate Rd., left on Summit Rd., at stop sign make left into large parking lot at entrance to Juniper Campground. Allow extra time on State Park roads due to cycle traffic safety regulations.
