Castle Rock to John Nicholas Hike + Drive

We’ll start from the Castle Rock State Park parking lot and hike along the Skyline Trail, connecting to the scenic John Nicholas Trail, and finish at the Black Road entrance of the John Nicholas Trail.

This route offers a peaceful journey through shaded trails, sandstone formations, and lush woodlands. Most of the hike is a gentle downhill, making it easier on the legs, with only a moderate ascent along the way.

• Distance: ~6 miles
• Elevation: ~500 ft ascent, ~800 ft descent
• Difficulty: Moderate (mostly downhill)
• Route: Point-to-point (shuttle required)

We’ll coordinate a car shuttle by parking one car at the Black Road trailhead and another at Castle Rock, then hike from Castle Rock to Black Road and shuttle back.
