Marvelous Day for a hike! Worked through five water crossings, muddy trails and sunshine. Totally worth it. The Escondido falls was spectacular and met some new and amazing friends! Then we headed to Solstics for Shenanigans! John, Thanks for making it a super fun day! Eric, thanks for sweeping.

John said if I learn to whoosh thru the water like him, I can wear my dryclean-only ivory jacket next time. I kinda liked Irina’s hiker hippie chic look too. Seriously, so much fun and great way to wrap up the weekend. And this time Joyce even decided to stick with us for at least 5 mins before some cute catnip came along. Great photos by the way, especially Andy who manages to capture heroism at its finest :)

I love how you put highlights into one sentence especially heroism of that poor boy carrying girl over the stream .. laughing

There's a funny backstory to that attempt at heroism...but alas, it's not mine to tell :)

Awesome times, John. The Blue sky, the water level, water flow, water temperature, and the mud (yes, the mud!) all came together perfectly. Thanks for spearheading everything.

It was amazing to see the raging river at Escondido. A lot of us bailed on leaping across and went to Solstice to find half of LA with the same idea. The Sheriff Dept made a fortune at Solstice with 40+ tickets given out - rightfully. (Remember, all 4 tires have to be off the road and over the white line.)

Someone suggested going to Sunset Cafe (end of Zuma/Pt Dume) where a group of 8 of us got a beachside table with excellent food and incredible views. Highly recommend it! We watched more tickets being given out because people think "no parking/tow away" doesn't apply when the surf is raging.

Thanks John for great hikes, smoothing the ranger's feathers, and being the catalyst for so much fun.

THE PARKING LOT TO SOLSTICE CANYON IS OPEN!!! and there's plenty of "road parking" for Escondido Falls... we WON'T be doing anything that requires ropes...

  • ! That JOHN G.

the parking lot for Solstice is closed Friday... so the second hike of the day may not happen (I'll check it out prior to make sure)... which means we'll just have to eat and drink more after the first hike!!

c doris... waterproof hiking shoes would be a better option, but if you don't have any and wear sneakers, just so you know you'll be going thru 2-3" of water and some mud in a few places...

I really wanted to do the double waterfall hike thingy, especially as my first with the group. John I hope you'll consider putting this one on the calendar again. I dont want to sound like a worrywart(?), and I dont know the exact terrain that this hike is going to be on, but I want people to take caution out there when around muddy slopes because its mudslide and rockslide heaven out there. I'm part of an network of offroad recovery teams and see alot of posts for help on FB. Last night was a real shitshow. 2 deaths. Hundreds of cars partially submerged. Mudslides. Sinkholes. Flooded interstates. Part of I-15 Southbound disintegrated and $1MM firetruck was lost. I'll spare you from posting links to all this stuff, much of which many of you already know (check out ABC7's facebook page)..I'm just saying, be careful, prepared, and choose your terrain wisely.

All that said, I cant wait to go out with and meet you guys! I'll be the one with the hat that says Big Dumb Newbie Worrywart.
