Face the Fiction/MSC: Wyrd Sisters & The Triplets of Belleville

This group meets on the second Saturday of each month and spotlights guest speakers from SF and genre related fields of interest.

Join us this month for a fun event.  Face the Fiction/Medium Screen Classics presents a double feature of The Wyrd Sisters (1997) and The Triplets of Belleville (2003).  This event will have food prepared from Nanny Ogg's cookbook!  Bring your appetite and imagination to this fun afternoon!

Wyrd Sisters (1997):  Meet Granny Weatherwax, the most highly regarded non-leader a coven of non-social witches could ever have. Generally, these loners don't get involved in anything, mush less royal intrigue. but then there are those times they can't help it. As Granny Weatherwax is about to discover, though, it's a lot harder to stir up trouble in the castle than some theatrical types would have you think. Even when you've got a few unexpected spells up your sleave.  Based on the Terry Pratchett novel. On Discworld, (a world carried on four elephants standing on a huge turtle travelling in space), in a small country called Lancre, three witches, the flowery Magrat Garlick, the lively Nanny Ogg and their leader Granny Weatherwax find themselves dragged into royal politics.

The Triplets of Belleville (2003):  The Triplets of Belleville is a 2003 animated comedy film written and directed by Sylvain Chomet.  When her grandson is kidnapped during the Tour de France, Madame Souza and her beloved pooch Bruno team up with the Belleville Sisters--an aged song-and-dance team from the days of Fred Astaire--to rescue him.

In my very first double (animated) feature Saturday with SFSNNJ we viewed “Wyrd Sisters” (1997) and “The Triplets of Belleville” (2003). “Wyrd Sisters” is based on Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novel of the same title and follows the book pretty closely. “The Triplets of Belleville” was written and directed by Sylvain Chomet. We also had some delicacies straight from the pages of Nanny Ogg’s Cookbook: C.M.O.T. (Cut Me Own Throat) Dibber’s Sausages Inna Bun and Jammy Devils. One can only assume the juxtaposition of two Discworld recipes created a magical vortex from which a third offering was created while sitting on the table since donuts appeared at some point and no one claimed to have brought them! Thanks to Gene for bringing libations (diet root beer – good stuff!) and Ann-Marie for bringing napkins, plates et. al. Afterwards, five of us met at Charlie Brown’s restaurant for some (safe non-vortex producing) food and continued discussion.
