Meet the Agile Tools vendors

Come and meet the Melbourne Agile tools teams.

The goal of this session is to provide you with exposure to some of the leading Agile tools in the Melbourne marketplace.

We'll have each Agile tool vendor set up with a stall. We will break everyone up into small groups and then run a series of iterations.

Each iteration people can switch to a new tool vendor conversation or continue with the one they are talking to.

If you'd like to participate as a presenter please get in touch.

Product vendors - please come and set up at 5pm.

Bring a large screen, and your own Internet connections. Expect to deal with crowds of about 12-15 people at a time.

Scout out the venue prior to the day if you aren't familiar with it. Let me know who is coming so I can manage any space issues. If you have suggestions abut the format of the night I am all ears.

Special thanks to Rally who has offered to put up a generous bar tab for the night.

Thanks to everyone for coming to this event, I hope you all had a fun evening and were able to learn something new along the way.

For anyone who's interested in learning more about the Rally platform feel free to reach out to me directly and I'd be happy to do a more detailed demo tailored to your specific needs (there's only so much you can cover in 8 minutes!).

There were a couple of notable vendors absent. Mingle from Thoughtworks is quite good is an agile tool, and not too expensive. And I use Pivotal Tracker daily, which I don't love. Actually, of the vendors that was there, the Atlassian tools are better than their representatives were able to convey. Also a big fan.

Hey Scott, glad you enjoyed the night. Neither Jodie or I claimed to represent Atlassian, we are are just users who like their product and thought they should be represented.

      I know. Thanks for coming!

I'm new in Scrum, but I know what differentiates Scrum from XP is that Scrum is an agile project management methodology while XP is an agile software development methodology.
However, when I compare the agile tools with project management applications such as MSP, Primavera, or Project Server, agile tools are not as straightforward as project management applications. Probably Rally was the only tool with a GUI similar to MSP Gantt chart. I also didn't see the common reports in PM such as Earned Value reports in these tools.

Another thing, when people ask me what tool they should use (I get this a lot) my first answer is always index cards. But if an online tool is required my next question is "what are you trying to do?"

Each team/org problem is different and often it's not one tool fits all. So whilst one tool is good and recommended by one it may not fit your situation. Again a trial in anger (not just demo) would help.

Chris is spot on with this comment I believe

One delighter feature is more of a non-functional. Some of the tools are more like set it up/configure it once (eg a template) and that's it. You are then locked into that setup.

As your team/org grows with agile the tool needs to adapt to the way you work (not the other way around). Some tools do it better than others in this regard. One thing with agile is that how you work will not be the same in months ahead as you continuously improve and change your policies.

Without naming the tools, we used one tool and soon found out it couldn't grow with our needs as we adapted and scaled so we had to migrate off to another tool.

I highly recommend you do a trial in anger (real work) of any tool and pick what you need now but be aware you WILL grow and the tool should support this.

In the conversations I had I heard people saying all the tools were looking good. In some cases we chatted about the significant improvements products have made even just in the last year.

It makes me wonder what "delighter" features are going to show up in the year ahead.

Unfortunately I can't make it, but it would be great if something could be put online. Perhaps someone in the crowd could take a few photos of key screens from each vendor and tweet them?

I am in the process of organising this. If you know someone who has an agile tool have them get in touch.

So far we know we will have someone from Rally, AgileBench, TFS, Mingle, and probably Jira.

If you have a tool you want to champion, get in touch.

Would be good to understand the agile mindset and agile culture of the tool vendors. This should be part of the tool selection criteria.
