Check out the Santa Clara Dive and Travel Expo

As if the latest dive equipment, seminars from ReefID and image displays put together by NCUPS, Backscatter and Mark Blum weren't enough, hors d'oeuvres too...

The Northern California Dive & Travel Expo, based in Santa Clara, California, is partnering with the Northern California Underwater Photographic Society (NCUPS) and SeaLife Underwater Cameras to celebrate the winners of the 48th Annual SEA Competition, an International Amateur Underwater Photo & Video competition.  The entrants and winners of this competition will be displayed and shown at theDive & Travel Expo, held May 4-5, 2013 in Santa Clara, California.

“I am excited about partnering with NCUPS. They are a great organization that benefits the dive community of Northern California. Our mission is to promote the sport of diving by engaging divers to dive locally and engage in local community events,” said event director Rick Stratton. “NCUPS is an established organization
whose commitment to local diving and events is substantial. They have a long history of engagement and support for our industry. It is a great partnership.”

Entrants and winners of the SEA Competition and the Bob Commer Award of Excellence in Underwater Photography will be presented by The Northern California Underwater Photographic Society and SeaLife Underwater Cameras at the Saturday Night Film Festival (SNFF) held at the Hyatt hotel, adjacent to the Santa Clara Convention Center. The SNFF will begin at 5:40 p.m. with free hors d'oeuvres served along with a no-host bar. In addition to SEA images and video, local photographer Mark Blum will present stunning 3-D images and Backscatter will present The Best of Backscatter, a collection of the incredible images produced by the innovative and aggressive photography company.

The competition is open to amateur photographers and videographers from around the world using any type of camera to capture our underwater world. With prizes totaling in the tens of thousands of dollars, award sponsors of the SEA 2013 competition include: SCUBA ecotourism resorts, travel agencies, luxury live-aboard dive boats, and SCUBA and photography equipment manufacturers. Previous competitions have brought in the finest still images and video entries from underwater photographers and videographers around the world!

The SEA 2013 competition will issue awards for the best work in still categories including Macro, Wide Angle, Underwater California, and Marine Conservation; plus Creative. There are two video categories: Classic and Video Snapshots.

The SEA 2013 competition Best of Show, in addition to a selected prize from the prize list, is awarded the prestigious Bob Commer Award of Photographic Excellence, which includes a trophy and a check for $500.00 USD!

Entry is open on March 1, 2013 – submissions will be allowed no later than April 12, 2013.

In case you didn't get a chance to attend this event or see the second showing of the winners at the most recent NCUPS meeting, you can check out the video and still productions on the NCUPS facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Northern-California-Underwater-Photographic-Society-NCUPS/126332227403582?ref=tn_tnmn

I had a good time, but it was easy to get overwhelmed by so much information (I don't go to trade shows much).

Anyone planning or want to plan a trip to Cozumel?

Scuba Club Cozumel is highly recommended.

Thanks! I was there about 15 years ago - always wonder if the magic can be recreated...but i'm expecting the worse because of past storms, etc. I remember orange or yellow barrel sponges big enough to sit-in (not that I did). I guess I can call the dive shops as well - but they may not have the perspective comparison between now and 15 years ago.

    @ Curtis Lee:
If you go, I would not recommend diving with Dive Paradise - their surface intervals were short, and I ended up in the Hyperbaric chamber for two days. Beautiful diving, but have no interest in returning to Cozumel!

I'd like to meet more divers from our particular Meet-Up group while at the expo, can we try to make a plan to meet up at a certain time there, like noon at theNorthern California Underwater Photographic Society (NCUPS) table, or somewhere else? Just not sure what groups are all going to be there...

Hey Danielle, missed you at the last couple of dives. The there is a cocktail hr just before the film festival that might be a good place for everyone to meet at from 5:30-6:30.

That actually sounds like a great idea. Later is better, I don't tend to be an early riser anyhow =) Looking forward to re-connecting and meeting new future dive buddies!
