Advanced ONLY Deep Dive

This is an ADVANCED DIVE. If you have any questions about your skill level email me. This is a canyon dive that will take us to about 100 feet below the surface. Just remember to bring two tanks if you want to do two dives! The wall along the canyon is loaded with beautiful sea life and this is an unforgettable dive! This can be a fun dive for those that are able to equalize quickly/reliably and keep a close eye on their air and depth as well as care for their buddy. Divers react differently to nitrogen levels around 80 feet and if you buddy starts acting strange-you are both turning around. We will do two dives to try to insure everyone gets a shot at bragging rights. Come prepared! There is a bathroom but it is inconvenient to our site. If you think you are going to need it -arrive a little early. There are no dive shops so all equipment should be checked and double checked before setting out for the morning. Arrive on time and be prepared to gear up and get in. Conditions at this site change rapidly and the later we wait the more difficult the entry/exit can be. If we are going to do two dives, we need to start the first one as early as possible. Bring Food and Water as there are no shops conveniently located here. Park along Highway 1 towards the northern end along the wide highway shoulder. Surge and surf can be unpredictable so we will suit up and get in the water early and ASAP.

Waves were negligible, we waded in and we waded out. Water was green from shore, bad sign for visibility, our disappointed hope was clear below. We were all using our flashlights, it was so dark below sixty feet the first dive was like a night dive. Front diver's flashing strobe locator was omnidirectional in the light-scattering soup of the dive.

Fish that grabbed attention was a crevice kelpfish, Gibbonsia montereyensis, red and gold with erect cirri behind the eyes.

Interesting nudibranch, did not snap ID photos. Blue was the dominant color with a lighter color waving in the cerata like a flabellina. It could have been Flabellina iodinea. Can anyone who saw it add details to the description?

Second dive was not as deep as first. We first checked out the edge of the channel, dove into the kelp at 40 feet, and stayed shallower than 60 feet before turning the dive.

Strawberry anemones were all joyfully open representing their kind brilliantly under our dive torches.

I'm happy that I finally made it to a Scuba Lovers dive! My carpool buddy, Lauren, was great and I enjoyed
meeting everyone who came to Monestary today. There was a little confusion about where EXACTLY we were supposed to meet but it all worked out in
the end. The organizers, Ben and Dave, were friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable about the site. (Ben brought excellent surface interval snacks.) The sea was glassy, it was overcast and the visability was reported to be very dark and green. I hope to make it to another event soon (and maybe not leave my drysuit at home like a knucklehead
    next time.....)
