How long have you been knitting? New enthusiast or old hand? What are your favorite knitting techniques these days?

My grandmother taught me how to knit when I was in elementary school. I've been knitting on and off since then, but didn't get really into it until my daughter was about to be born (even though I didn't finish that project until she was almost 3.5!), and, even then, I think I didn't get *really* serious until I bought a blocking board about two years ago. Why then? Because blocking boards are dang expensive, that's why! I also started down the path to spinning my own yarn at Stitches 2009, then at Stitches West 2010 I got my Lendrum DT and I am in love! As far as knitting goes, these days I am obsessed with socks and shawls--though I hardly ever finish any of them :) I also really realllly want to make a sweater and something with colorwork. I'm getting there though!

What kind of objects do you like to knit? Do you keep 'em, sell 'em or give 'em away?

I like to knit socks, shawls, hats (just ask my daughter--she has a billion), fingerless gloves. I mostly give my stuff away. So far I think I've only made myself a pair of socks. I'm working on my first sweater though..I'm thinking I should've started with a bulky cropped cardigan instead of a laceweight cardi :) Live and learn! With spinning I tend to hoard all teh yarnz, but I'm in the process of starting to sell some and do custom spinning on the side.

How did you start knitting? Who taught you and how did you catch the bug?

What is one topic you want to learn more about in knitting or fiber arts, and why?

I want to learn more about colorwork and how to break free from the constraints of a pattern and just make what I want. I have ideas in my head, but I need to learn how to let go a little and not be so freaked out by ripping stuff back so that the ideas can come out. With spinning I want to learn how to do long draw and spin from batts! I am also trying to figure out sweater sizing. I've got the yarn, but the last two times I was really ready to start knitting a sweater for myself I ended up pregnant haha. Hopefully that doesn't prove to be a permanent trend!

I'm a wife and mother to three awesome kids. I got a BS in Earth Sciences from UCSC and love science, math, art, history and pretty much everything else...except bug stuff. That's nasty. I also love to laugh & have fun.

What Alissia is saying about this Meetup Group

I love this group! It's a great group of people with a wide range of ages, life experiences, outside interests and personalities who all love the same thing I do (knitting)! Everyone I've met has been funny, pleasant and just fun to be around and I'm so glad to be part of everything.
