Kris and Aaron - thanks!  This is quite what I was looking for.

Why not Github, et al?  My learning style: I learn best in the middle of things.  I'll probably end up in some hosted-service, but I'd like to host-myself (?!?) to learn how it all works, how to best take advantage of things, what's really difficult (so that I can appreciate what someone else is willing to setup!), etc.

And I don't like paying for services that I don't use fully. So I'd like to learn Git Hosting before paying for it.

If anyone else has other software or services they like, I'm still interested in checking stuff out.  For example, has anyone used the Jira-related git-service?

Thanks for the insights thus-far,

Gitlab  uses gitolite underneath and has a fairly nice web UI.  You can self-host it too.
