August: Osage County at SIFF Uptown

  • Jan 20, 2014 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

If the boozy epic confrontations of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" or "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" are your definition of a good time, then this is the place to be. Accusations are shouted, plates are smashed, doors are slammed and casseroles abused. At the very least, you will likely hold your own family in a higher regard this holiday season. -Susan Wloszczyna

August: Osage County is based on Tracy Letts's Tony and Pulitzer-prize winning play of the same name, and stars Meryl Streep as the matriarch of the Weston family, who have gathered together to pay their last respects to one of their own.  To say that they don't get along is an understatement.

We will be meeting at 6:30 for the 6:45 film.  Buy your ticket outside, then head to the lobby.  I will be standing near the water fountain, in between the two entrances to Theater 1.  I will also have my cell phone on until about 5 minutes before the film starts, so feel free to text me if you're having trouble locating me. NOTE THAT SIFF CINEMA STAFF DO NOT KNOW WE ARE COMING, SO IF YOU ASK THEM WHERE WE ARE MEETING, THEY WILL HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. Since the theater shouldn't be too full (it seats almost 500, after all), we will all go in as a group about 5-10 minutes before previews begin.  Before heading into the theater, please make sure you sign in with me, as I do take attendance.  Once the end credits have finished, we will regroup in the lobby before heading to a local restaurant for our post-film discussion.

SIFF has free parking after 6 pm! Just drive up to the loading zone near the ticket window and ask for a parking pass when you buy your ticket.  They will direct you to the lot.  Otherwise, a gazillion buses stop near the Uptown, including the 1, 2, 8, 32, and D Line.

Here is the rest of Susan Wloszczyna's review of the film: http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/august-osage-county-2013

Currently, the film is scoring a 65% on Rotten Tomatoes with the critics, and a 75% with viewers: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/august_osage_county/

Hope to see everyone there!

The movie itself featured some excellent acting, and lots of nastiness on the part of the characters, which seems to have been passed down from generation to generation, though lessened to some degree. Hard to like a movie with so much dysfunction, even as I was marveling at the acting, especially from Meryl Streep. The group who came out to see this, however, was great, and I enjoyed the discussion afterwards. Hope to see you all at another meetup, and thanks for coming out!

Movie had excellent acting, but what a downer of a movie. I actually walked out almost at the ending. I guess I was not in the mood.

Would have enjoyed seeing this film with the group but...buses will be on a holiday schedule...

I should also mention that anyone coming by bus should make sure they know what schedule (holiday/reduced) the bus is running. Some run reduced weekday, while others might not run at all.

I've already seen it. Love the American gothic extremity, gallows humor of this script: "Don't get all Carson McCullers on me!" Martindale and Cooper have awesome, natural timing, while Streep and Roberts have one long, epic showdown, throughout.

If anyone has volunteer, member, or sponsor vouchers from SIFF, they can all be used at this screening (provided the vouchers are for SIFF Cinema, and not exclusive to the festival). Just thought I would throw that out there. :-)

    Hi All-
If anyone is interested in waiting until some of the new great movies move to the Crest, I would be happy to organize these outings. The Crest is $3. and often gets the best movies within 3 months of release Also, the theater is less crowded and has a couple of late-night happy hours nearby! Get in touch with me if that interests you.

Me too. Just not on weekends when it is packed!

Arlene, you might want to mention this on our message board. That way, all the members can see it, not just the ones going to this meetup.

Hello, wondering if anyone going to see August: Osage County would be driving home north near the Shoreline area and would have room for me driving back with them...my 2nd bus stops running early. Since its MLK b'day on Monday, bus schedules will be sketchy. Thanks...

I've changed the location of this meetup, as I have a feeling that the Uptown Theater might be easier to get to for most of you. Plus, they have free parking after 6, and it will be showing on their big screen.

Just saw it. Marvelous acting of all characters in this dark comedy.
