Oscar Nominated Shorts: Live Action @ Harvard Exit

We will be attending the 4:30 showing of the “Oscar Nominated Short Films 2014 Live Action” at the Harvard Exit Theater located in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. These are the five short films that are up for an Oscar at the March 2 Academy Awards. Here is a description of the program taken from the Landmark Theatres web site:

“Don't miss this rare opportunity to see all five Academy Award nominees in the category of Best Live Action Short! Program includes: "Do I Have to Take Care of Everything?" (Finland), in which Mother Sini, late for a wedding, is going crazy since nobody else in her family seems to be able to do anything right; "Helium" (Denmark), in which a hospital's eccentric janitor helps a young dying boy regain the joy and happiness of life; "Just Before Losing Everything" (France), in which Miriam hurries to pick up her children to take them to her work place, and explains to her boss that she has to leave the region in a rush; "That Wasn’t Me" (Spain), the story of Paula and Kaney, an African child and a Spanish woman, who could have nothing in common, but will get to join their lives forever through a life-giving shot; and "The Voorman Problem" (UK), in which Doctor Williams is called in to examine the enigmatic Mr. Voorman, a prisoner who believes he is a god.”

The last film on this list stars Martin Freeman who you know as Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit” series and as Dr. John Watson in PBS's “Sherlock” series. Here is the site where you can see previews of these films:

The majority of the reviews for this program are positive though it does no have a superior overall rating (65 on rottentomatoes.com based on a limited number of reviews). Here is a link to one review which is informative:

Film Journal review

Meet me at 4:15 in the lobby of the Harvard Exit Theater. I am an Asian male who wears glasses and who will probably be wearing a hat of some type (beret, hiker's rain hat, African brimless cap). A head shot of me is in the photo section of my profile so you can see for whom to look. My cell phone,[masked], will be on until the start of the program. Note: I use a "dumbphone" (i.e., no frills or data plan though it does meet Military Standard 810G, eg, it will operate in a sand storm) so do not send any text messages or post any comments on the web site - I will be unable to read those. Please call me if you need to contact me.

There will be an optional food and beverage stop at the conclusion of the film (conclusion = after all the credits have been shown). Meet me in the lobby of the theater at which time we will decide which establishment to patronize (most likely the DeLuxe Grill at the end of the block on Broadway).

Excellent films! I didn't stay for the conversation because of the snow and a long drive home. But great movie selection. :)

A full meal of delicious films, followed by snacks and excellent conversation. I especially enjoyed Martin Freeman as a befuddled shrink and the film concerning child soldiers. Thanks, George, for organizing this!

Hi George -- Will you be hosting the animated shorts too? Is this the final week for them, as well? I seem to recall the shorts showings went on for many weeks last year.

Laura: Greg will be hosting the Animation Shorts. I believe that he will do this on Sunday at around 7:00 pm.

Awesome, do we need to print the ticket or buy it there?

Rich: This is the second (and final) week that this program will be available so my guess is that you will be able to buy your ticket at the door. Given that there might be snow on the ground you might postpone your ticket purchase until the last minute whether it is on-line or at the door.
