Stairway Walk: Lakewood-Seward Park!

Our favorite part of this 3.3 mile stairway route follows the shoulder of a wooded hillside through the heart of the neighborhood. On this early spring day, we'll be immersed beneath a canopy of freshly leafed-out trees. Lake Washington will be a big visual presence too (click here for more views of the route).

Lakewood-Seward Park has an interesting history closely tied to the level of the lake, which dropped 9 feet in 1917, when the Ship Canal opened. We'll learn a bit about that when the route takes a turn through old Wetmore Slough, now high and dry and known as Genesee Park.

In addition to covering 3.3 miles in about 2 hours, we'll climb 207 steps and descend another 174. There's ample residential parking around Lakewood Park. If you're coming by bus, MT50 runs between Alki, Beacon Hill and Rainier Valley, with a stop near our meeting place.

I won't have a car that day, so I won't be able to make the trio from Bellevue. Bummer - I love urban hikes.

Rebecca, I'm coming from Bellevue. Happy to give you a lift, if you like.

Hope you do more! I am stuck at work until 4 on Saturdays for now but would be happy to attend or even co-host future events, since there are a TON of stairs in the area and I'm already exploring them.

Any objections to bringing a well-behaved dog?

Hi Jarrod, we love to have dogs along too - as long as they get along with humans and other dogs - which it sounds like yours does! City parks do require dogs to be on leash, and we'll be walking in parks a couple of places along the way.
