Salon Night at The Dragon House (or: Show and Tell for your Brain)
• What we'll do I guess salon is not a term thats in use enough these days, so let me be clear, this is NOT an evening centered around hair and beauty. Allow me to share the wikipedia definition: A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation. Salons were an invention of the Italians in the 16th century but most of the historical references are of the French in the 17th and 18th century. So... In this day and age of instant information via your phone... of situational unawareness in public due to your phone, of the Seattle Freeze due to culture, of the growing "culture of ignorance", of the lack of connection with other humans and understanding how others think and live even though they might live just across the street from you... It's time to have an event that allows people to share something of substance that they care about with one another. In the traditional Salons, all forms of expression were embraced. From storytelling, to poetry reading, to song, to comedy, to dance, to performance art, to a reading from your journal, to sharing some research or deep thought you have recently had, to sharing a work of art you have recently created (painting, pottery, sewing, making of all forms). These presentations can range in tone from scholarly to entertainment oritentated all the way to erotically inclined, And I'd love to embrace all of the diversity represented here. and I'd love to go one step farther, and give the evening a theme. For this evening: Technology. The interpretation of that word is up to you. How you interact with technology, some new technology you have discovered and added to your life, how technology is affecting you personally, your social life, your dating life, your work life, or our society, or the medical profession, how you feel about a technology, some new technology you are working with that you are excited to share with others, a new technology you are involved in pushing forward, How you teach a technology to others, ALL are fair interpretations, and I am sure that I have missed some. As an example: I have been studying Genomics of late, and I will give a presentation of a single phenomena that made me say: "Oh! THATS WHY!" when I learned it, and I'll try do it in a way that will hopefully be approachable by everyone. I'd like to give the evening some small amount of structure. I propose that we gather at my house, (The Dragon House), and take turns presenting to everyone there. There will be no pressure to present anything, but I suspect that almost everyone has something that popped into their head as a result of the topic, and I for one want to hear your thoughts. I'd like to limit the time to 4-5 minutes per presenter. I propose breaks here and there so it doesn't feel like one of the evenin • What to bring • Important to know
