Eldorado Canyon: Crescent Meadows Trail

  • Mar 16, 2014 · 9:30 AM

Update!!! I took a stroll up to Crescent Meadows yesterday and the trails are perfect. You may want to take your traction devices but not snowshoes.

"When you find yourself digging into a deeper hole the best thing you can do is, Stop digging!" Will Rogers

This is one of my favorite Hikes! Please bring a camera for this hike…It’s a doozie! This trail is not in the Eldorao Canyon State Park but outside the fee area.

The Ute Native American tribes who lived in the mountains of Colorado and Utah frequented Eldorado Canyon, savoring the warm springs for health and spiritual renewal. A few arrowheads and artifacts remain, as most were removed before Eldorado Canyon became a State Park. In Spanish, the words “el dorado” mean gilded or covered with gold, which may refer to the golden color of the lichen on the cliffs.

This is a 5 mile Round-Trip with an easy to moderate trail level. Hardly any elevation gain. Walk to the information board and bear right and merge onto the Crescent Meadows Trail. At the end of this 2.5 mile journey we’ll come to what I call the STAIRCASE. This is a very steep decline and can be dangerous if you’re not watching what you’re doing. It's a good[masked] foot drop. I prefer to wait until the summer to hike down the STAIRCASE!

At the bottom of the STAIRCASE the Crescent Meadows Trail crosses over South Boulder Creek merging with the Walker Ranch Trail. Because of potential icy hazards I do not want to go down the STAIRCASE. A few years ago a member from another group decided to take the chance and guess who had to go fetch him? To this day I don’t know what I was thinking. However the hike from Crescent Meadows Trailhead to this point is extremely pleasant and the views of El Dorado Canyon in the distance are beautiful.

Directions to Crescent Meadows Trail Head: Depending on where you're coming from, find your way to the junction of Hwy 93 and Hwy 72. This junction is between Golden and Boulder. Travel west on Hwy 72 for about 7 miles. You will be driving through Coal Creek Canyon. You'll go through a small town where you'll see a Sinclair Gas Station on the left. Turn Right on Crescent Park Dr; travel one mile always staying to your left until you come to a T junction. Take a right and head down a couple more miles, cross a Rail Road Track. A few hundred feet from the tracks you'll see the trail head marked El Dorado Crescent Meadows Trail.

I Hope all of you have a great week!

You will not be going through El Dorado Springs. Stay with the directions in the posting. You'll see a sign on CO-93 what directions to take to Pinecliffe and Wondervu, that's where you need to be!!! forget anything about El Dorado Canyon or El Dorado Springs. This trail is just a segment of the Canyon.

Susan or anyone else needing a ride, I'll meet you at the Penny's parking lot on the southside or the Westminster Mall at around 8:30AM. I'll be in a charcoal jeep!
