Weather Advisory: If the Preserve officials cancel the hike, and unless it's a blinding rain, WE WILL STILL HIKE but not there. Carolyn has offered to lead us on other nearby trails. Ponchos are usually available at Job Lot, Bennys and EMS at minimal cost. Meet at Luigis at 12:45 and we will follow her to the secondary site.
NOTE: Please park in the furthest spaces back from Luigis.
With the addition of The Preserve, the 1000 acre forest, to the existing Old Saybrook park system, the town will have one of the biggest and be amongst the best park systems in the state.
Chris Cryder of Save the Sound will again be leading this hike which he describes as " . . . a fast paced 3.5 to 4 hour rigorous hike of the complete loop of the Old Saybrook park system." I'm thinking rolling terrain with the distance making it moderate in difficulty. For more info, see http://www.preserve1000acres.com
Two groups - there will be a separate leader for the slower back of the pack to avoid the "parade" of the last event. This hike is also one of the events designed to showcase the pristine nature of what is said to be the largest undeveloped forested area along the coast between NY and Boston. The towns of Essex, Westbrook and Old Saybrook will be holding referendums soon to explore funding to buy the tract and protect it for future use as a recreational area.
We will end up back at Luigi's for after hike food and drink.
As usual, dress in layers as temperature swings can be dramatic this time of year. Bring water and snacks for the trail. Proper hiking footwear required.
Your RSVP to this event denotes you are in good health and have read and agree to the group's liability waiver found under the Pages heading at the top of the page.
Look for a white Honda CRV and Meet-Up signs in the parking lot.
