Indoors & Outdoors
**Dress warmly to explore the paths, frozen pond, and animal area.**
738 Thatcher Ave,
River Forest, IL 60305
Southwest corner at the intersection of Thatcher Ave. and Chicago Ave.
Trailside Museum of Natural History, part of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, is a little-known hidden gem. It's more of a small nature center at the mouth of a forest, ponds, and trails, rather than what you'd expect of a museum. The building is an 1876 Victorian mansion. Trailside has resident animals (red fox, coyote, birds of prey) unable to live in the wild due to injuries, as well as aquariums with fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Lively bird watching too!
The parking lot entrance is on Chicago Ave. Additional street parking is marked with a painted "parking lane" such as on Thatcher Ave.
(Drivers: Feel free to offer to pick up public transit people from the nearby end of the Green Line train at Harlem & Lake.)
Public Transit (Be sure to check for yourself!)
If coming from downtown Chicago, you can take the Green Line to Harlem, then the #309 Bus to Thatcher Ave, walk 3 blocks north. Or take Metra's UP-W line, then walk 3 blocks north.
