How to do or hire out great ebook formatting

Member Mark O'Bannon has invited his friend Yvonne Betancourt to talk with us about ebook formatting. Yvonne has been designing eBooks for about a year and a half and will demystify the how-to and how-to-hire-it-out process for us.

I have been recommending a bunch of services but I have never hired an ebook designer. So this will be interesting. I've recommended BookBaby and Vook as good hands-off, let them do it for you services for a reasonable price. Also Scrivener, a $45 desktop app, for those who like a writing and organization app, which can also export to ebook formats. Folium Book Studio for the geekier author who wants to DIY. And PressBooks for the blog-to-book folks, because it outputs to ebook and print formats, too.

But my friend John McAlester, who owns Pigeonlab.net - a company that distributes ebooks for 10% of sales - says that so many of the ebooks he gets are not formatted perfectly so that they look good in Kindle and in EPUB and in Sony EPUB and in Nook and and and... so he recommends hiring a professional.

So you see, there are a lot of options! Come with your questions, or ask them here, in advance of the meetup.

Oh, and I see there's a FREE Download "Twelve Marketing Tips for  Self-Published Authors" PDF on Yvonne's site - check it out.

I have not published yet, but I'm close. I was going to use Amazon Create Space and I understand that they have formatters you can employ with their company to get it all straight. Has anyone used their service? How much did it cost? Were you satisfied?

Also, I think I need to additionally publish the same book with Barnes and Nobel so it can be on Nook? Is this the same process? How do you get formatting done there? How much does it cost? (same question) Also, will Amazon have an option for my printed books? I'd like to order some for signing (softcovers) and also have them available to buy? Will Barnes and Nobel carry the softcovers if I have Amazon create them? Actually, I KNOW I have a friend who published that way and I bought my softcover printed book of hers through B&N because Amazon had temporarily sold out. I'll ask my friend more about this, but any insight here could be helpful.

Oh boy, you really need us! Please download the perk - the first chapter of my Self-Publishing Boot Camp Guide for Authors (Starting Down Your Self-Publishing Path - see left column of the meetup page for this group) offered for this meetup group and I think you'll be able to ask a better question :-). Hope to see you on Tuesday! -Carla

Thank you so much for encouraging me to attend. This formatting topic was exactly what I needed.

I've been to 2 meet-ups thus far and this one about formatting was my first one. So informative, it will keep me returning for more.

As usual, these meetings are water for my sponge, providing an enormous amount of new information that I hadn't had any exposure to previously. Highly recommended for anyone who is seriously looking into self-publishing their work.

I wonder if someone could help me with two things: I want to connect my website blogs automatically with Pinterest, and 2. Walk me through what I am doing wrong with my movie reviews. Often, they just don't connect to my website. SOS. I am planning on attending tomorrow (Tuesday) night. Anyone available before or after? I would VASTLY appreciate your help.

Tasha you should probably bring your laptop if you want help - I don't think I can help you with those things but perhaps someone in the group can... This gives me an idea for a "working" session with stuff like this fixed and displayed on a projector. Or maybe we can break into mini-groups.

I will bring my laptop on Tuesday, Carla. And yes, your idea of a working session might help those of us less savvy in social media.
