I strongly believe that the Semantic Web is the Next Big Thing. Give it 5 years and everyone will be talking about it. This evolutionary process is already happening: consider XML, microformats, geotagging, and web services.
I have worked with XML since 1999. My 2005 book, Wicked Cool Java, contained a chapter on the Semantic Web and explored many of these technologies with programming examples. I would like to become proficient in GRDDL and SPARQL.
Many experts have used "search" as the prototypical application. This will be an important application, but I think semantic mashups, GIS, semantic web services, R&D, and KM will grow. Also, new applications that we cannot imagine today.
I'm a software developer, technical trainer, and author who occasionally works in the semantic web space.
It's a great place to learn about new technology, and to be a part of something that will revolutionize the web as we know it.
