Sensemakers Newsletter; free tickets & looking for a space

Hi all,

A sunny greet from Amsterdam where we’re enjoying a beautiful day!
Last week Gijs did a special workshop to teach the basics of micropython, you can find all the information on our wiki, and for those who want to continue experimenting, feel free to do so at our Lab evening. We’ll probably also do a follow up Special in January as there was so much interest.
But we also hope to see you this Wednesday at, we have startup sharing their story! They successfully launched 2 satellites and are open for business (IoT services). They’ll talk right after prof. Brasseur explaining the (communication) choices they made to collect data for monitoring seals. We’ll also raffle of 2 tickets for ThingsCon!

Unfortunately after a year of hosting us in their beautiful auditorium, the number of students at Codam is growing that much that they can’t facilitate us anymore. We’re very thankful for all they did, and we hope that we can use the power of our community to find another space in Amsterdam for every 3th Wednesday of the month from 18 – 21.30h, at walking distance of public transport (preferably near a train station (Central Station, Amstel, Bijlmer or Zuid?). As everything we do is volunteer based, we’re looking for a place free of charge. Of course in exchange you get a lot of exposure and the chance to meet a very divers and motivated group of people!

  • Very interesting thread/talk on getting specific about Algorithmic Bias.
  • This is a classic, but still so true, @troyhunt wondered what warning labels on IoT devices that have had serious security vulnerabilities would look like.
  • The U.K. government is proposing new legislation aimed at improving security of Internet of Things devices.
  • One of our communitymembers Krijn Hoogendorp has written a book on Raspberry Pi & IoT (in Dutch), perfect to learn the basics. He donated one for in the Makerspace and one that will be raffled of in Slack! Use the code Sensem for a 15% discount!
