What we're about

Do you see games as an art form? Do you dissect mechanics in video games? Are you playing games every chance you can get?

We’re a group of fanatics who see gaming as something more than an idle diversion.

We're players! We seek out the best gaming experiences out there, from paper puzzles to immersive escape rooms, from tabletop games to Playstation.

We're thinkers! We're the ones pondering what makes a game fun and satisfying, and the ones dreaming about the future of gaming using new technologies. Why is it normal to discuss fine art and literature, but not to discuss what makes Stardew Valley fun?

We're creators! Some of us even take our curiosity to the next level by building our own games. Here you’ll find thoughtful people to talk to or even collaborate with. Let us see what you’re working on or even just hear your ideas!

My vision for this group is as a community of people with shared interests. Events will be primarily be focused around meeting new people, opportunities to play games together, and casual conversation. But based on interest I can envision some other types of events as well:

  • Console/PC video game events [Online]
  • Escape rooms [In-person]
  • Game jams/indie game collaboration [Online]
  • Game playtesting [In-person/Online]
  • Guest lectures [In-person/Online]

If any of these sound fun to you and you're ready to get serious about games, join today! We can't wait to see you.

Video Game Book Club: Rain World & Emergent/Systemic Games

Publik Coffee Roasters

How is a game designer unlike a film director? Is the point of game design to deliver one great experience to all players, or to create an environment in which the player can play?

In our Video Game Book Club series, we pick a game—sometimes popular, sometimes not—that is worth a closer look. Just like a typical book club, bring all your thoughts and opinions to the table and we'll hold an open discussion. We'll discuss the individual game, but also seek out larger truths about game design in general.

In this event, we'll discuss the game Rain World and the subject of emergence in game design. I encourage you to bring your own ideas about what that means, but this GMTK video might help you understand it better.

GMTK - The Rise of the Systemic Game

This is an event for game enthusiasts. It's not necessary that you be a game designer or be a published game critic. The only requirement is that you've played Rain World before joining. You don't even need to have finished the game to be a part of the discussion!

The event will take place in a meeting room at Publik Coffee on West Temple. Please note that this is not the Publik in the Avenues or by the U. The meeting room is upstairs, on the side of the building furthest from the staircase. We have 2 hours reserved, so even if you can't make it on time feel free to join us at any point.

The room seats about 10-12 comfortably, but it starts to get crowded beyond that. I'm going to cap the attendees at 18 just to make sure we're not crammed in like sardines. Please don't RSVP unless you see yourself realistically attending, and please update your RSVP if you later decide not to go.

If you can't make it but want to carry on the conversation digitally, be sure to join our Discord server!
