Collared and Cuffed: a clothing swap and sweater redo

Collared and Cuffed: a clothing swap and sweater redo ****Note: This event has changed, so please read the new information!****
Subject: a clothing swap including sweater knits and fur / faux fur demo (hand sewing techniques with a sewing machine demo) Project: We’ll put fur / faux fur collars and cuffs on cardigans and learn how to handle sweater knits when sewing them so they don’t unravel or warp. If you are tired of the same sweaters that have been in rotation for ever in your wardrobe, join us on Saturday, February 7th from 12:00 to 4:00 for a sweater swap and refurbish. We'll be holding it at an experimental new artists space over on the East side of Austin. Here is the general itinerary: 12:00 show up with your bag of sweaters and clothes made out of fur or fake fur that you are ready to give away. Or just show up. 12:00 - 1:00 the swap is on. 1:00 - 2:00 there will be a simple demo on tricks and techniques for sewing with sweater knits and pile fabrics (fur, fake fur, velvet, etc.) There will be some pile fabrics available, but if you are after something special, please bring it. 2:00 - 4:00 continue swaping or start cutting and sewing by hand. There will be a few collar and cuff patterns to use as a jumping point. We are asking for a $5 donation at the door to cover set up and cleaning costs and to help support the artists co-op. Anslee, who is the Art Director of Space 12, will be hosting this event. Here is her website:
http://www.lyinginthe.... She would also like to start hosting a regularly scheduled clothing swap that goes all out with silk screening, sewing stations, professional assistance and more to be held once a fashion season. This little sweater swap will be the test run. There are some great little tables there to set your sewing machine on if you would like to bring one. **** We're shaking things up this Saturday, so throw out the old sweater idea! Ok, don't completely throw out that idea, but check this out. So, we've decided to open up this event to a general clothing swap as we prepare for this beautiful, warm weather. We will still have the sweater demo for those interested, but that won't be the focus. This way, we can work on cute skirts, turning shirts into springy dresses, repurposing that mumu - whatever! We wanted to have more fun with it instead of limiting everyone to just sweaters. (But bring them anyway!) In the space, we will have areas set up for sewing machines, embellishments, fitting, trying on, etc. There are some pretty cool areas inside and out which would make perfect environments for photo shoots for your new creations this Saturday, so with your clothes and whatnots, bring your cameras! Also, there is a little kitchen area, and we would love to make it a potluck-type event where we not only aid each other in our crafting abilities but share our delicious creations as well. So, if you're anything like me and you go some places just for the food, bring some to share and indulge in the helpings of others. This isn't a requirement, but it is a fun added bonus! I also wanted to tell you a little bit about Space12. This former nightclub was really bringing down the community around it when it was in business as it was an after hours club that ran until about 4 am. The neighborhood wasn't very fond of the place, and after a police shooting, it was shut down over a year ago. It has since been reformed and repurposed to become a community center to bring the neighborhood back together. I am the Art Director there and it has been so amazing to see the community become more vibrant through the things that have been going on there. We've had Frankenbike hosted there a few times along with the East Austin Studio Tour this past November, and it will be exciting for me as well as the community and those involved with the space to see it become more and more useful as time goes on. We currently have 2nd Saturdays happening every month that is pretty fun - crocheting, games, 30 Rock/Arrested Development/Flight of the Conchords, etc. - so you should stop by, even if you can't make it this Saturday!

A good demonstration on sewing with sweaters and stretchy knits. Nice people, nice location.

I really enjoyed the time meeting everyone. I wish I had the time before the meeting to get needed materials. I didn't come very prepared. I'm excited about transforming my very boring sweaters in to something more interesting.
