What is your history with sewing?

I have been sewing for 10 years working mostly in costumes for theatre and ballet but I have also done formal-wear and tailoring and some patterning. I started sewing in undergrad where I got my degree in Drama then went on to get my Masters in Costume Design and Technology. From there I moved to New York where I worked on Broadway, Opera and Ballet costumes for four years and did some freelance work on the side. I miss it but am very glad to be back in Ausitn.

Tell us about your sewing machine(s).

Right now I have a great and dependable Singer home machine that I got as a gift when I got my Master's degree. Someday, when I have the space for it, I would love to own an industrial machine.

When you make a mistake while sewing, what do you do?

Pull out my friendly seam-ripper and try again... if all else fails, I sew it by hand, which sometimes I prefer.

What's your favorite thing you've ever sewn? Can we see a picture?

I've made so many great things it's hard to choose one! But if I had to, it would be the short ruffle denim skirt that I made from an old pair of jeans. It's my favorite because it's one of the few things I've been able to make for myself instead of someone else. It feels rewarding when I get to wear it. Here's a picture:

If skill, time, and resources were no issue, what would you sew right now?

A dress that made me look awesome. I always have trouble finding dresses that fit me and I would love to make one that I could wear and look/feel awesome in.

I'm a new mom recently moved back to Austin from NYC and I'm hoping to find time to get out of the house and start sewing again!
