What we’re about
I have my MEd in Human Sexuality Studies and I’m starting a (very low-stakes) sexuality book club in 2026. Yes, this is technically a book club, but I don't actually care if you read the book. The goal is to provide a free to low-cost community gathering where we chit chat about a specific topic related to sexuality, eat some snacks, and meet some new people.
- Where & When: This will be bimonthly/every other month starting in Feb 2026. So, only 6 books throughout next year! I want to keep this low-lift and monthly feels daunting to me. Once I have a sense of who is interested I will send out a form to find a date that works best for the first meeting. In the colder months it will be hosted at my apartment in Astoria and in the warmer months it will be hosted outside somewhere. There will be a capacity limit for the events hosted in my home, but anything outside will have unlimited capacity.
- What will we read: Books that touch on any aspect of sexuality (think relationships, desire, anatomy, birth, gender, societal context, sexual orientations, etc.). Can be fiction or nonfiction. I have a long list of options and will take recommendations from folks, we'll select a few to vote on each time. I'm aiming to have February's book selected by early/mid December.
- Some logistics around time and $$: If buying a book is inaccessible and it isn't in stock at the library, I will work hard to find a free pdf version and the lowest-cost ways to access the book. If the idea of finishing a book sounds daunting (again, no pressure to finish it!) I will have a shareable google calendar with suggested dates on when to have parts of the book read in order to help pace the reading, for those interested.
