ABBAS KIAROSTAMI REMEMBERED: CLOSE-UP
Far too many important artists passed on in 2016, including the radical, brilliant Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami. As we look forward to a brighter 2017, we conclude our film program for the year with a special screening of his masterpiece, Close-up. This fiction-documentary hybrid uses a sensational real-life event—the arrest of a young man for fraudulently impersonating a well-known filmmaker —as the basis for a stunning, multilayered investigation into movies, identity, artistic creation, and existence, in which the real people from the case play themselves.
Voted in 2012 Sight & Sound poll onto The Top 50 Greatest Films of All Time list (#42)
Synopsis: The film tells the story of the real-life trial of a man who impersonated film-maker Mohsen Makhmalbaf, conning a family into believing they would star in his new film.
