Management of complex production databases, preferably at a large consumer-facing Internet site
Strong knowledge of MySQL best practices
MySQL Master/Slave replication, load balancing, clustering and high-availability
Ensuring integrity of master databases and slaves
Backup and recovery
Strong understanding of database fundamentals including transactions, indexing, locking, concurrency, caching and buffer tuning
Query optimization includes slow query log analysis and query performance tuning
Fluent in use of unix command line (iostat, lsof etc) and common tools such as mytop
Proficient in at least one scripting language with an ability and strong desire to automate routine tasks
Database Management: Responsible for installation, management, upgrades and updates to all databases in the production, QA, testing and development environments
Monitoring: Overall monitoring of database health, activity, performance trends and storage needs
Availability: Maximize uptime, implement and maintain proper safeguards for backup, replication and recovery
Scalability: Monitor performance, trends, bottlenecks, sources of database load and ensure that the database is scalable
Security: Define and implement user privileges and access controls to data in a multi-tenant environment
Release process: Schema change management - preparation and implementation of database migrations, checklists and scripts
Automation: Develop scripts to automate DB admin tasks and maintain system configuration using Chef
Development Support: Help engineers adopt database best practices, review database change requests and provide optimization advice
Reporting: Perform ad-hoc queries and other reporting needs to support different business units. Architecting and design reporting databases or data warehouses
On call support: On call support backed up by Engine Yard for both database and general system administration needs.
We currently use the Engine Yard stack and Engine Yard provides level 2 support for production environment 24x7x365. You will be working closely with Engine Yard DBAs and their support team.
Cloud computing, especially with Amazon EC2
Working in an agile environment
Experience with multi-tenant databases and SAAS
NoSQL - how to use it, pros and cons, replication and reliability and what kind of tasks it can be good for
Use of NewRelic or similar for performance diagnostics and tuning
RoR experience and/or a strong desire to learn RoR
MySQL DBA certification
5+ years experience in MySQL Administration and tuning
Able to express technical concepts clearly and
Excellent and self-directed problem solving skills
A strong desire to constantly learn new things and to educate others and share best practices
