OLENKA is a 1985 Catalina 30 ft. sloop rigged, sailboat

Always be prepared for cold and wet conditions, regardless of weather and season. Summer months are usually very windy. Dress in layers with outer shell being wind and water proof. Synthetics are better than cotton. Warm and tight hat is recommended. It’s always a good idea to have a set of warm and dry clothes to change to. Trust me on this one. Please wear white-sole or non marking shoes. Don’t forget the sunscreen.

Please use a bathroom on land before we go, even when you feel you don’t have to. The boat has a head (bathroom) but using it underway is difficult and I try to limit the trips to the pump out station to minimum.

The boat has all the safety equipment required by USCG, including life jackets (PFD’s) for everyone on board, First Aid Kit, fire extinguishers, flares, VHF marine radio and GPS. I require wearing a life jacket unless you are in a cabin.

Sea sickness is rare when sailing on the Bay but if you are prone to getting sick you may want to take one of the available medications ahead of time; like Dramamine, Bonine or Ginger Gum. I will also try to keep you busy, what is the best remedy for the sickness.

Sailboats heel, considerably at some points of sail. To help to balance the boat, I will ask you to sit on the windward, the high side of the boat as much as practical.

Watch the boom; it can really hurt you when it hits your head.

Watch for small items like car keys or cell phones, especially when boarding the boat, they like to find their way to the water.

Drinks and snacks to share are always a good idea. So is a camera; there is never a shortage of opportunities for great shots.

And probably the most important thing to bring with you on a sailing trip: good attitude.

Where we will sail largely depends on the conditions that day, mostly wind and tides. But regardless of our course or destination, the Bay offers so much beauty and challenge that you will not be disappointed.
