The 'xx (All welcome!)

It's Labor Day weekend, and since no one ever makes plans during that weekend, let's play some more 18xx games - most people have Monday off, so we can stay late, maybe play two games. There will likely be at least one table for new players, and probably one table for more experienced players.

If you need rules explanations, please be sure to show up roughly on time - or notify us in advance if you are going to be late. WE WILL NOT EXPLAIN RULES IF YOU JOIN AFTER 11:30 WITHOUT ADVANCED NOTICE, you will have to sit this one out but are more than welcome to watch. It is not unlikely that a second game will be on offer

The 18xx games are EXTREMELY difficult economic games where you will calculate 60% of $230 about 437 times an hour. Calculators are recommended (cell phone calcs work). They are very involved games where a slight misstep can cause you to bankrupt. The light at the end of the tunnel might just be an $1100 train out of pocket. Expect an intro-game to take at least 3-5 hours, possibly as many as 7, with more experienced-player games often taking longer. DO NOT JOIN IF YOU CANNOT COMMIT TO STAYING FOR AN ENTIRE GAME!

TL;DR version:

-If you arrive after 11:30 without communication, you will not be able to play
-You MUST be able to commit to staying to at least 6 p.m. - the game might take that long, and leaving in the middle can ruin the game.
-Probably two tables, one for newer players, one for more experienced players.
-This is a "boring" economic train stock manipulation game. Many people complain "it feels like work." It is, however, an extremely powerful, deep, and flexible system.

1880 noise on threads comments on the game in general makes it seem like at least an interesting variation.

I hated B&O by Eagle Games. It was all calculations and no fun. This is coming from a banker who carries his HP12C with him everywhere. Are 18xx games really dry???

The B&O calculations are relatively streamlined from 18xx calculations. As I indicated above, many people complain "it feels like work not fun." If you didn't like the B&O calculations, I'm not sure 18xx is the right type of game for you.
