Avalon Hill's Civilization

OK I think we will give this a go this upcoming weekend.  I expect it to be a completely learning game where the goal is really to learn how to play and hopefully get through a full game.

I really would like everyone to learn the rules and at least contemplate what some strategies might be before Saturday.  I would recommend this video for an overview and some of the rules: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W91PN8ElGvA

And here are the full rules, it would help a lot if everyone is pretty familiar with the details:  http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/91498/civilization-rules

The original Civilization board game was published in 1980 by Avalon Hill, designed by Francis Tresham (yeah the same guy who did the first 18xx game).

It's definitely not as popular today as it used to be, as there are many streamlined games that condense the civ-building experience into something much more manageable, time-wise. Yet there is something alluring about the game's cult-like status, particularly among hardcore gamers who were into gaming long before Euros were a thing.

I've heard so much about this game, I even went out and dropped $100+ on a giant map, cards and counter set. Probably would have been much cheaper to find a used copy. Anyway I pretty much have to play it now.

We just need about 5 players and the game should take maybe 6 hours. I want to try the original basic Civilization, using the Western Expansion setup for optimal balance as suggested by veterans on BGG.

That was fun! Didnt quite finish but I think we saw pretty much all aspects of the game in play.

It was good. It'd be a good rainy day game. But next time let's try to make sure that Joe gets invaded occasionally, too.

This looks really interesting — I'm likely to be up for this, but it depends on my calendar... Long ago, I was temporarily addicted to Sid Meier's Civilization (and recently inadvertently got a nephew hooked on the most recent version), so this looks familiar but a bit foreign. Is there a discussion of the variations for civilization games anywhere?

Seriously? That's like telling someone "look on the internet".

Allright I guess this Saturday's as good as any time to give this a try. I posted some links in the description. This is a hell of a long game but I really want to try to make it move along. And... I don't know any strategies really so I won't be able to explain much. So that means everyone needs to have a pretty good idea how to play before we start.

I Have played this game. It takes a while to build up steam and gain military strength though the ages. I seems abit endless.

I set the date for October 19th but it could change depending on if enough people can make it.
