It says here that "150 Meetup organizers went", but that is not true. Half of those who RSVP'd "Yes" were no-shows. Staff at the door had individual name tags for those 150, to prevent anyone from crashing this party. Too bad for the 140 people on the waiting list. It was nice to hear the stories from a panel of organizers of four diverse meetup groups. We got to meet Meetup's VP for Strategy, but it would have been much better if he'd had the courage to ask those gathered, "How are y'all liking Meetup's New View?" The New View had been enforced on all groups 2 months earlier, to many complaints. I suppose that was a warning that Meetup might unleash an even greater monstrosity as it did on January 27, 2011.

Interesting space (despite being in a scary neighborhood), but I really didn't get too much out of it because the emphasis was on people's highly anecdotal experiences, rather than the actual mechanics of running a successful meetup. It also didn't really work for those of us that are using meetup for more formal and organized groups.

Great meeting. The panel was enlightening and so much fun to listen to. Thanks to Mark at the Box SF for making the space available. Really gorgeous space!

Thanx 4 a good evening. I would also like more structured ways to meet everyone to facilitate more networking connections.

Overall, a great event, thanks for getting us together! Panelists were engaging, and it was nice to be able to network with fellow organizers and share ideas. A couple thoughts. Maybe next time there is a panel discussion, the same questions could be asked of all the panelists in more of a round robin fashion. We in the audience clearly had certain topics we wanted to spend time on (e.g., to charge/not charge; sponsorship; member retention/attrition; tools and support; meetup event formats; etc.) Maybe for future events we could submit 2-3 questions beforehand to help figure out what the most popular themes seem to be. And then the panelists could be steered to discuss what they do or how they handle those challenges.

It was both instructive and entertaining to hear the stories of successful meetup organizers.

Thank you so much for making this happen. It was a fun event, I made some great connections and learned a few valuable things I might do to make my meetup group even better. Awesome!

The meeting was a great way to bring all of us together in a supportive, creative environment where we could listen, contribute and learn. The space was comfortable, easy to get to and parking was a breeze. I believe what would have made this event more helpful is having more time to network, you taking questions or advice prior to the event to be addressed during the event. The panel discussion was important, new devel's, and more Q&A time needed. Due to time constraints, I apologize for not offering more detail around my comments. Still, I thought it might be helpful to you all as you go back to review the success of the event and how to make it/or the support experience even better.

Met some great people, learned some very good information about running my meetup.

It was OK. There were interesting experiences to learn from but most of the conversation was not relevant to my meetup group. I recommended to the people from HQ to help us organize a meeting for related groups rather than this 'anyone is welcome' style.

This is a great way to meet other organizers and learn about their trials and errors as well as a great group of people. You can easily mingle with other organizers as well as join forces with other organizers to create new fun meetup events.

How about an Idea Exchange on Sunday afternoon, May 9th, say 3 to 5 p.m. at the gallery in the Metreon for those unable to attend the May 5th program. No staff, but we can still learn from one another. I'd like to post it on this site as an Event Organizer. Edith...is this OK?

Silly me, I HAVE to start combining my social/work calendar. When I signed up for May 5, I totally didn't connect it with Cinco de Mayo for which I already had a friend's birthday to attend!! Tom Merle PLEASE continue with your plans for an upmeetup on the weekend. I am VERY interested in the information coming from this event. Thanks!

    May 1, 2010

  • tom m.

For those unable to attend the upcoming meetup because the room can't accommodate all who want to attend, I'd be glad to host an "unmeetup" (similar to an unconference) to share views that same night or on the weekend if that works for more folks. See venue pics/location (Metreon) link below

No worries Gini! We'll keep you on the list :)

I just got moved up into the waiting list, but it looks like I can't come from my comment about taking a class. But I am planning to attend. How do I change that comment, since I rescheduled my class, without ending up getting off the list of attendees -- or can one of the organizers change this.

I just freed up my place for all 139 of you to fight over.
Since space is so limited, I suggest you all want to limit that each group is represented by at most 1 (/2) people.

Is it possible to make this a two day event? The second day of course being for the 139+ on the waiting list.

We can accommodate 250 in the middle of a spectacular gallery in the Metreon, across the street from Web 2.0 conference space. I also have access to that number of folding chairs at minimal cost. We'll provide special wines for sampling to make it more social.
