DATE CHANGE: West Marin Loop (not an official designation, I made it up)

  • Golden Gate Bridge Bike/Ped Plaza

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, CA (map)

    37.807384 -122.475441

  • Push off 8:15am sharp. I know that is early for many of us, but it is a long ride and it is getting dark early these days.

GGB/San Francisco to Mill Valley to 4 Corners to Muir Woods, then up Hwy1 to Point Reyes to Nicasio then back via White Hill and Camino Alto. Be prepared for climbs out of Mill Valley, on Hwy 1, White Hill and Camino Alto. Don't worry if you are not fast up hills - no one will get left behind and I am often the last one to the top of the hill. Expect a 10-12mph average pace and something in the neighborhood of 80 miles and at least 8 hours. We will stop for lunch, probably in Pt. Reyes, but bring plenty of snacks and water plus sunscreen, layers, spare tube and a lock.

Thank you to Peter G for suggesting this ride and finding a route map:

Sunday, 10am-4pm has a better chance of no rain. I'm open to a 4 or 5-hr ride anywhere within this time window.

The weather report is 100% chance of rain tomorrow. :( I don't want to do an 80 mile ride, especially this one with some long downhills, in the rain. Depending on what the rain actually looks like, I might be up for a shorter ride. I'll check weather around 7am and post an update.....

Cannot make this ride. Saturday is difficult day for me to ride, scheduling conflicts.

Sorry you won't be able to make the ride. There have been in the past and are in the future rides scheduled on other days. If you would like organizing privileges so that you can post rides that fit your schedule, let me know. The worst that can happen is that you end up riding alone on a day you planned to ride anyway.

I have ridden on that section of Hwy 1 and I did it solo. You are right about it being narrow and winding with blind corners - but that limits auto speeds. I didn't have any close calls when I rode it. Otherwise, what Peter said.

I have not gone on that section of HWY 1 to Pt. Reyes. It will probably be beyond 4pm due to rest stops and lunch stop. Ideally you should not be under any deadline to return.

Any idea what the grade is on Hwy 1? Is it comparable to Camino Alto ascents? Hwy 1 is quite narrow and winding (with blind corners) and I wonder how safe it is for bikers. Also, do you expect to return by around 4pm, if the ride takes 8 hours?
