• Shut Up & Write!™ Weekly Afternoon (2.5hr+ Oakland Marathon)
Hi Everyone: Join us for 2 hours and half hours of concentrated writing. This is the lobby area of the building that Modern coffee is in. It is a really nice space. There is wifi from modern coffee(but not reliable and can be quite slow), there is proximity to Bart(19th), and there is plenty of little places to get snacks, food and drink from if you feel like it. It is also very quiet with no ambient noise(if you need it, bring your own music player)good plugs and great tables. (parking is not ideal around here, very busy and very expensive, street meters usually can only be found about 3-4 blocks away. I encourage public transportation or biking) This meetup has been a life saver for me, and I continue to hope to meet more of you during the write up. If you are off work early or can catch the last hour or so, join us! coworking works well for those of us who need a bit more pressure or structure from working with a group. This meetup is ALWAYS ON, in fact even when it is just myself, I am usually at the location since it is my mobile office, BUT, if there is no sign up, I might be prone to laziness and take a day off once in a while, so always try to sign on to help keep me on my best behavior. It only takes 2 people to form a team. Arrive or leave anytime you like. Come and join us for a marathon of focused writing! Bring whatever you need to write - short story, novel, poem, memoir, thesis, blog or a manifesto! Bring a laptop, bring a pen, bring a notebook. We will do a brief intro for those who arrive on time. If you arrive after the intro time, just wave and find a seat at our table or nearby our table. When we are finished, chat a bit if the spirit strikes you and your neighbors or just wave to those still working and head out. writing can be a lonely activity, getting to know our partners help foster more motivation(and peer pressure :)) but also feel free to leave early. this is a very casual group, the main goal is to provide silent partnership in getting work/writing done. 2:15 pm- Brief Introductions (name and project you working on, goal for today) 2:30: pm - Shut up and Write! During this Marathon, feel free to take your personal small breaks, stand up and walk around. 4:50--wrap up and congratulate yourself for the hard work. If you're spending too much time THINKING about writing, come and join us for a session of focused writing. It may just be "pipe-cleaning" for now, but you'll feel better showing up at the page. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Please make sure to purchase beverages and/or food during the time you are there to make sure we are welcomed back. Directions: 19th Bart is the closest(about 2-3 blocks walk). parking is quite difficult and not recommended.

Come join us to write at Jay's Cafe in Alameda, a sweet spot in the center of town. Jay's has wi-fi, good coffee, delicious baked goods made on site, as well as soups and sandwiches. It looks tiny from the outside but there's a separate room to the left of the counter with comfortable chairs and tables and a fresh, clean ambiance. By starting at 2:00 we'll avoid most of the lunch crowd so there should be plenty of room. Here's the plan: Come in and get settled wherever you want to work. No formal check-in, but if you see me (I'll have a small Shut Up & Write sign on my table) just let me know that you're there and you're part of the group. Start writing. We'll break at 3:00 for introductions and check-in--that way people who need to arrive late or leave early can still participate. After the check-in, you can continue writing until the cafe closes at 5:00. Parking: Street parking is generally easy to find. ***As a courtesy to other writers who want to attend, if you RSVP Yes and then later decide not to come, PLEASE change your RSVP to No so someone on the Waiting list can move up. ***

  • Shut Up & Write!™ Mission/Castro Daytime
Hey Everybody, The Daytime Mission Shut Up and Write! is still going strong, but we've added a new day and a new location that is a little more Castro adjacent. I hope you'll join us for some daytime writing. Here's the details: • Look for the MeetUp sign, and come say hi. Because we are in a public space with people who will not be there for the meetup, I won't necessarily know you're there for Shut Up & Write! • This particular venue is a little wonky, so having a large block of tables is difficult. We'll try to grab a few that are all next to each other if we can. Look for the signs. • There will be two focused 1.25 hour sessions of writing. No one will look at what you've written when the meetup is over. • Please plan on purchasing some food or beverage to support the venue. They are offering to host us with the assumption that we will be good for business. Here's the schedule: 10:00 - 10:15 - Coffee and chatting 10:15 - 11:30 - I'll set the timer and we'll write for an hour and fifteen minutes. 11:30 - 11:45 - quick break for coffee, stretching of legs, congratulating each other on 75 minutes of good focus, etc. 11:45 - 1:00 - Heads down, keyboards clacking (or pen flying, if that's your MO) People can continue to work, chat, or take off as they like. PLEASE NOTE: The conversations of other patrons who are not there for the meetup are occasionally noisy. Consider bringing headphones or similar device if you need to block out distraction! There are some electrical outlets, but you might want to start out with your laptop battery fully charged, in case it's difficult for you to get to power. Wifi is available with a purchase. AND: Parking can be challenging, so use public transit if possible or leave plenty of time to find a spot. I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday! Thanks, John Your Organizer

  • Shut Up & Write!™ Tue-Fri (2-3 hours Oakland Marathon)
We are here Tues-Friday morning, happy to sit and write at a table with anyone who is willing to take advantage of the silent group work experience. Come when you can and leave anytime you're ready to go. The LuckyDuck Bicycle Cafe is really cool, 3 blocks from the 12th Street BART. A very unassuming and hip kind of place with high ceilings. It doubles as a bicycle repair/sale shop. We really like the ambiance and feeling here, although it might be slightly noisier than some (nothing a pair of headphones can't fix). There is internet (although sometimes it's a bit slow or erratic), and plugs! Wow, wifi and plugs, a lot of coffee shops simply don't provide those anymore. We support wherever we go by always buying something -- they are a business, after all :) Parking is street meter and most do not have trouble finding a spot within a couple of blocks. Co-working works well for those of us who need a bit more pressure or structure. This meetup is ALWAYS ON. It only takes 2 people to form a team. Arrive or leave anytime you like. Come join us for a morning of focused writing! Bring whatever you need to write - short story, novel, poem, memoir, thesis, blog or a manifesto! Bring a laptop, bring a pen, bring a notebook. When we are finished, chat a bit if the spirit strikes you and your neighbors, or just wave to those still working and head out. This is a very casual group, the goal is to provide silent partnership and support to get work/writing done. 9:00 am- Brief Introductions (your name, the project you're working on, or your goal for the day) 9:10 am - Shut up and Write! During this marathon, feel free to take your own personal small breaks, stand up, stretch, and walk around. 11:45 am--wrap up and congratulate yourself for the hard work. If you're spending too much time THINKING about writing, come and join us. It may just be "pipe-cleaning" for now, but you'll feel better showing up on the page. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Please make sure we keep our welcome by purchasing something from the cafe. Thanks.

  • Shut Up & Write!™ SOMA
Start your week off right at a wonderful bookstore-cafe! Join us for nearly 90 minutes of writing at Crossroads Cafe, the ORIGINAL Shut-Up and Write location! NOTE: NEW START TIME: 6:30 PM We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 6:30 on most Monday nights. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, join us and get some real writing done. 6:30 - 6:40 - Quick Intros: "I'm Jay and I'm writing a short story tonight." 6:35 - 6:45 - Timer Starts: Write for 75+ minutes. 7:55 - Timer Chimes: Quick Check-In: "It took a while to get going, but I got some actual work done on the story." 8:00 - Meetup Ends and Cafe Closes. We generally linger about a bit but make sure to be on our way by 8:15. NOTE: Crossroads is now closing earlier, at 8:00 PM. We are experimenting with new start times and when we do our introductions. SEATING: In the bookstore section, on the left side of the cafe. Please try to occupy all chairs in our area. You can, in fact, sit anywhere in the cafe. But be sure to join us for the quick intro before the session and the friendly check-in afterward. GUIDELINES: Crossroads has great food at outstanding prices. ($1.00 small coffee, $5.50 wine, $7.00 sandwiches/salads). We’re all expected to buy something to support them. Crossroads Yelp Review (http://www.yelp.com/biz/crossroads-cafe-san-francisco-7) • Crossroads does NOT have WiFi. We often have a portable hotspot available if you do need to get online. • CHARGE your batteries: there’s just two outlets in the area. • Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the cafe’s overhead music or the occasional conversation by other patrons. TRAVEL / PARKING: Crossroads is a short half-block from the Brannan MUNI platform on the N & T lines. Parking is generally easy, with meters in front and free parking on Brannan or side streets. COME EARLY AND CHAT ABOUT WRITNG: Writing is very solitary. Connecting, sharing knowledge and simply chatting with other writers is a great thing. The bookstore section where we write has a wonderful vibe perfect for both quiet writing and friendly sharing. After our check-in at the end of the session, some of us go for a stroll around the neighborhood and/or grab a beverage nearby. It's great to spend some more time chatting with your fellow writers. This is a great time to get recommendations on things like using writing software, finding editors, utilizing online blogging and video platforms or self-publishing. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with us after the session. (The leader will be the one with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer. Happy writing and we look forward to seeing you at Crossroads!

    • What we'll do Just Imagine, a clean well-lighted place.... ... where neither tweets nor beeps, neither phones nor humming refrigerators, neither pets nor kids, nor any other malevolent Pavlovian entity can beckon you away from the shear joy (or impossible agony) of creating great (or modest) literary, poetic, jocular or blogospherian written or doodled works. Come join us for 2 1/2 hours of quiet creative composition, undisturbed by the world...except for ear-splitting sirens from the fire trucks on the other side of the wall from time to time. Planned into the program is a 15-minute break at the end of each full hour for stretching, meeting, chatting, refilling (three great coffee/wine bars within a 2-minute crawl). Also, during the breaks, if one or two writers would like, we'll do a few-minute Q&A of their underway work -- We Q; She/He A's. • What to bring Drinks and snacks are allowed. Please plan to clean up before you leave • Important to know Come to door directly across from the Police Department. Please do NOT ring at the fire department door
