What we're about

Shut Up & Write!® is more than a movement, more than a good idea. We’re a method of writing that delivers. As an international organization, we are thousands of writers in a worldwide community, but most importantly, we are writers who write together in a local cafe. Join us.

We have events every week, all over. Sometimes we talk after. Whatever you’re writing, whatever form it takes, wherever you are in your process, you won’t be the only one.

And if you need help with your writing, we offer that too.

Meetup Event Format
It is an empowering and rewarding experience to write an hour each week, at the same time and place. It serves as powerful support for building your daily writing discipline.

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled. At the Meetup our Organizer will lead introductions and then everyone will sit down and write.

Afterwards, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. The Shut Up & Write!® format brings a social facet to a normally isolated craft.

Our Meetups are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

“Writing is the only thing that, when I do it, I don't feel I should be doing something else.“ - Gloria Steinem

This is your time to write.

Shut Up & Write! Groton

The Bridge Market

This is a new location of the international Shut Up & Write! community.

WHAT WE'LL DO:
Join us for an hour (or two) of writing! We've discovered that it's strikingly helpful to write (rather than talk) with other writers. See if it's true for you on Wednesday afternoons. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem, or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking or talking about writing, come and get some real writing done!

SCHEDULE:
3-3:10pm- SESSION 1: Give a quick intro to your neighbor and set an hourly goal (be open and mindful: allow your neighbor to NOT share if they so choose).
3:10-4pm: write WITHOUT TALKING for 50 minutes
4-4:10pm - SESSION 2: (intros to new folks; take off if you want to) maybe repeat intros or just set a second hourly goal.
5pm: Pack up or stay afterwards to discuss your writing.

REMEMBER, DON'T TALK: Writing requires not talking. Of course, connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing! If you must talk during our 2 hour writing sessions please seat yourself away from writers and rejoin us when you're ready to silently write. Or stick around after 10:15am to chat about your work.

BEING LATE IS OKAY: Just show up and get seated without chatter; wait to do greetings/intros at the end of the session. As folks arrive, others already seated and writing please silently make room for friendly latecomers.

WHAT TO BRING:
-Whatever you need to be able to write (Please charge devices prior to arriving, as there are only two available power outlets)
-Money for food or beverage (While it is not a requirement to purchase food or beverage, The Bridge Market was carefully selected as a local business to support. As such, please be mindful to not bring outside food or beverages.)
-Headphones/earplugs are recommended to block out ambient noise or other customers
-Portable light if you need more lighting (overhead lighting may be dim)
-Layered clothing is useful as the temperature fluctuates depending on how much the door is opened and closed

PARKING:
There is ample parking in the attached lot.

ACCESSIBILITY: The building is wheelchair accessible.

NO SHOWS: THREE "no shows" deletes your membership from this group so please udate your RSVP to "not going" if you need to prior to the event start.
