Birding & visiting Mexico border

[Details for this outing are forthcoming, including final price and a link for signing up via Sierra Club online systems, so please check back on this posting for updated information. ]

Come to beautiful Douglas, AZ, to experience our Birds & Borders tour.

Itinerary:

Hosted by the Sierra Club's Border Lands http://www.sierraclub.org/borderlands/ campaign, we will arrive Fri. evening, have a delicious meal, and settle into our comfortable lodging, check out the wetlands and cranes and other birds Sat. a.m. , then cross from Douglas, AZ, USA, into Agua Prieta, Mexico & the wall (your passport will be required). Co-leader is Elna Otter.

After lunch in Mexico, we will experience the hospitality of the Migrant Resource Center. Then we will visit the coffee bagging at Café Justo, where shade grown organic coffee is grown mostly in Oaxaco and Chiapas cooperativos, and other services offered to returning migrants. Our guide will be Jocabed Gallegos from Fronterra de Cristo http://www.fronteradecristo.org/. Saturday evening will be at a Mexican seafood restaurant [not included in price].

Sunday, we will view more birds, then go to the border where the wall crosses the San Pedro River to see how migratory patterns for mammals are disrupted by the wall. Sierra Club's own Dan Millis, of the Border Lands campaign, will offer his stories from his experiences.

Date was chosen as it is one week after Wings over Wilcox annual birding event: http://www.wingsoverwillcox.com/.  There are many places for tourists to explore in Cochise County: www.explorecochise.com

Estimated cost per person will be under $200, which includes van rental, 5 meals, lodging; total may decrease if over 10 participants. All participants must have passports valid thru July 2014. Contact [masked] for more details & to learn how to register & link for payment. One must pre-pay for SC trips. If you wish to cancel & there's a waitlist, then money'll be refunded; if not, about $50 is still tax-deductible. Registering at this site is not adequate as participants must pre-pay at link Kathy will send you.

Car pooling to Douglas/Tucson: in the interests of facilitating the logistics of some outings, it is customary that participants make car pooling arrangements. The Sierra Club does not have insurance for car pooling arrangements and assumes no liability for them. Car pooling, ride sharing or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among the participants. Participants assume the risks associated with this travel. It is customary for car pooling participants to share or reimburse gas expenses to the driver.

We will share van expenses [which is included in registration fee] after arrival in Tucson or Douglas. There will be an extra charge for pickup at Tucson airport.

Liability Waivers: In order to participate on one of the Sierra Club's outings, you will need to sign a liability waiver at the site. This waiver is a document that releases the Sierra Club and its leaders from liability for events that may happen on an outing. By signing a liability waiver, the participant acknowledges the risks involved in the outing or activity, assumes those risks, and agrees to not hold the Sierra Club and its leaders responsible for injuries and/or death related to the outing or activity.

This will be an exciting trip full of birds and an educational tour of how the U.S./Mexico border wall is impacting local and migrating wildlife! Come join us!
