ITINERARY

Saturday, March 9th:

Come join us for day of review and practice of Crevasse Rescue Skills. We will start the day by reviewing individual skills such as: stopping a fall; building anchors and various mechanical advantage rescue systems; and ascending a rope using prussiks/webbing. We will run through several potential scenarios and demo how to build appropriate systems to match the scenario. We will then divide into rope teams so everyone can get several reps of hands-on practice.

Please bring your harness, prussiks/slings, and at least two locking carabiners, your pickets, and climbing rope. If you do not yet own these items, SMG has some group gear that will be available for use.

Thanks Ian - how was the ice at Lee Vining?

      March 10, 2013

    • Ian

LVC was great. Chinard Falls is fat and routes on the Main wall are in. It was not too crowded. It did get warm at the end of the day and the ice at the top was getting a little soft and wet. The sun hits the top of the ice at the end of the day. There should be at least a couple weeks of climbing left. Get started early keep an eye on the temps.

Thanks Tom - glad you found it useful. First time Rob and I have done one of these so we will use our experience to hopefully make the next one even better. If time and schedules allow and there is enough interest, we may do another of these while conditions up the hill are still good.

Hey All - I have not been up to Donner since this week's snowfall. Ski resorts are reporting 6" in last 24 hours and they got more than a foot earlier this week - so bring your snowshoes if you have them. We will not be traveling far from where we will park - but I plan to bring mine just in case.

Hey Everyone - I heard back from Sugar Bowl Academy and we have permission for up to 8 vechicles (hopefully enough for our and Darren's group) to use their parking lot at Donner tomorrow. I will make up dashboard signs with the required info they want us to display on the dash of each vehicle and distribute these to drivers tomorrow morning.

However, the initial meetup point for most of us will be at the Roseville park and ride. We will carpool from there.

I'm driving from the city with Mark, stopping by at the meeting point in Roseville on the way. Do we need Sno-Park permit or anything at Donner Summit?

    March 8, 2013

According to the Sno-Park website it is not a Sno-Park area. Usually we just park on the shoulder of Hwy 40 near the Sugar Bowl Academy. Hopefully with recent snow that is still possible. If not, we might have to park a little farther away.

Hey Cathy, I don't mind scooping you up but I will not be staying for the meeting after. Also, depending on the conditions, I too may need to carpool from Roseville.

    March 6, 2013

    • Cathy J.

Thanks Trent. I am still planning to stay for the meeting.

Hey everyone. If you have time, it would be to your advantage to review some basic knots including the alpine butterfly, clove hitch, figure-eight, and munter. These will all be utilized in the crevasse rescue portion of the training. Rob

Hey everyone - you are all welcome to attend and participate in the Board of Directors meeting after the event on Saturday. Just in case that was not clear. I anticipate that we will finish up by 5 pm at the latest and then head over to the Summit Restaurant (about 2 miles from our event) for the meeting and a burger. We should be rolling back to Roseville by 8:15. If you wish to attend be sure to RSVP separately for the meeting so we can arrange transport for those who choose not to attend the BOD meeting. Thanks!

Hi - would it be possible to get picked up in Auburn off the Elm Ave. exit? Or carpool from Auburn? I plan on staying for the board meeting after. Maybe hitch a ride with a group that plans on staying after

You won't need crampons unless you plan to climb after we are done. We will be about .25 miles from the road.

Hey team, I am interested in joining a carpool from the meetup location. My poor tired truck won't make it past the meetup location until I can scratch up the funds for a new radiator. If anyone has any extra space that would be a big help. I am coming from the bay area, so if it make sense to meet before getting all the way out to Roseville to save gas, that would be fine with me!

    March 4, 2013

    • Wayne

Mike, if you meet me at Safeway around 6 you can catch a ride with me. I will be attending the board meeting afterwards.

Ah, tough decisions. Already rsvp'd on the Donner Peak trip which I was looking forward to. Would have loved to see this on the 16th!

    • Darren S.

Yeah, sorry Mike, that weekend wasn't an option. Don't worry this won't be the only chance to visit these skills this year.
