SMC RCK 1 - Rock Climbing Level 1 Training Course (1 SPOT AVAILABLE)

SMC's premier rock climbing course, this essential training provides the foundation for climbing. With a full 16 hours of focused instruction split between the classroom and the rock, you'll get a solid understanding of the fundamental skills you'll need to venture higher. RCK 1 provides both a very specific focus on important details such as face, crack and slab climbing technique, safety, belaying, lowering and gear all the way out to an overview of the scope of modern climbing. Course completion qualifies you to attend club climbs that require RCK 1 skills. We have room for 10 students. For current SMC members only. Not a member? Join here.

• 16 hours of instruction, with 8 hrs. in the classroom and 8 hrs. outdoors on real rock

• Maximum 5:1 student-to-instructor ratio

• Classroom materials and curriculum are available online - sample overview here.

• Harnesses, helmets, and gear provided, footwear not provided, you are encouraged to use your own gear which will be inspected prior to use.

• Course registration requires a fee to help cover classroom rental and related expenses

• 50% minimum deposit due prior to attendance

• Housing is available on-site at Clair Tappaan Lodge, at around $55 per night including some meals.

Saturday, the classroom session from 10am to 6pm and will cover the basic skills, knots, equipment and concepts relating to outdoor rock climbing and will include multimedia presentations and hands-on-learning utilizing SMC's proprietary training devices.

Sunday will be held outside in the Sierra from 8am to 4pm and will focus on putting your skills to work climbing on cracks, slab, and chimneys, scrambling, belaying, lowering and practicing your skills under the supervision of SMC instructors and mentors. 

This course has limited enrollment and a low student-to-instructor ratio so we can be sure you are learning the key skills and concepts required to safely participate in future club outings, or outings of your own.

Successful course completion qualifies you to pursue RCK 1 sign-off, get ready for the RCK 2 Training Course, and most importantly qualifies you to attend technical club climbing events rated at the RCK 1 Level, like this one:
