Mt Starr King / Gunsight

This is a low 5th class climb in Yosemite that is a "brother" to Half Dome. We will either hike out of the valley with 5000 ft and 7 miles of approach or start at Glacier Point Road with only 1000 ft and a 4 mile approach depending upon the interest.

You should be comfortable with exposure and be prepared to climb, downclimb and/or rappel.

I would like to drive Friday evening and get relatively close to Yosemite so that we may get an early start Saturday.

More info to come as this develops.

Ok I am driving into the park Saturday morning from Fresno. I only have a 18 M rope but I will purchase one that is 60M this week. I would like to do Gunsight Sunday but its unlikely I can make it two days in a row this weekend.

See you all at 6:45 my cell[masked]

PS; Vanessa you see sitting on the waiting list is from the Fresno area. I have rock climbed with her. She climbs rocks very well. Fearless

I'm going to ride with Morgan. He wants to leave early in the morning. Since he is driver, I cannot argue that. :)

Alright I'll be on the road around 130am Saturday. Erica if you can't catch a ride with the Friday crew let me know. I can give you a ride if you like. I'm coming back Sunday night. Rob I'll bring a rack just in case.

Gees, Wayne, you're almost Darren? Only thing missing is another 10 miles to the approach, 4000 ft of gain and drive home that night!

lol... thanks Rick. Hey what can I say I do like the early start. It's paid off big time for us this year!

We have a campsite for 6, 2 vehicles at Upper Pines Campground in the Village, Site 126 - Friday and Saturday night.

Rob, just a thought. We can make my house a meeting spot. It's not too far off 99 and on the way and whoever is riding with you can leave their car there instead of leaving it at Starbucks for the weekend. Rick? Erica?

Travel Plans: So far, I believe Wayne and Morgan are going to meet us at Mono Meadow Trailhead Saturday morning at 6:45. Bauer, I'll talk to you tonight about your travel plans. Slavensky and Erica - what are your plans?

Also - who is planning to stay for Sundays hike up Gunsight as well?

    November 6, 2013

Okay... I have an email prepared to send out, but completed it on a different user on my work computer so will send it out later this afternoon once I get access. Let's talk about a couple things. 1 travel: We will meet at 6:45 at the Mono Meadow Trailhead. I plan to leave Friday afternoon around 2-3, but if noone is interested, I dont mind waiting until early Saturday morning. Let me know your travel plans and interests please. 2. We have two ropes (myself and Morgan). I will bring a full rack of pro - I would like for someone to bring another just in case we decided to climb in parallel. 3. I am definitely staying until Sunday so if you're riding with me - plan to do so also or figure out a ride home with someone else. Anyone else interested in staying and if so - what would you like to climb/hike on Sunday?

    Rob

Thanks Rob. I'll meet you guys at the trailhead Saturday morning. What time are we thinking? 5-6am? I have Monday off (Veterans Day) so I think I'll stick around Sunday.

      October 31, 2013

    • Rob R.

Above, I mentioned 645am just because some are driving that morning. If you want to meet earlier, I'm open to that.

Hi Rob, I live in Fresno. I belong to the group however never participated in any of the SMC hikes in the past. I have rock climbed before and very experienced when it comes to hiking. I figured if I can meet you guys early Saturday morning then I would love to join you for the hike/climb. I just need to know the gear I should bring beside the 10 essentials, water, food, harness, climbing shoes? I have short rope. Meet up location and time to be there. cell number, etc. Thanks Morgan

Rob, Thanks for getting back to me. I look forward to meeting all of you. I am going to throw my climbing shoes in my pack just because. I will bring my rope. My cell number is[masked]-3577. If Mono Meadow is where we plan to meet then shoot out directions for that as well. Let me know anything I can bring or how I can assist.

      October 29, 2013

    • Rob R.

Morgan - I assume you have a 60m rope? Thanks for offering to bring it.

      October 31, 2013

  • Rob R.

So - thus far we're going to head in at Mono Meadows off of Glacier Point Road. It's still open but could change depending on the weather. There is some snow but the SouthEast Saddle usually remains exposed unless we get considerably more. I may stay for Sunday and do another climb if others are interested.

Hi everyone! This will be my first time with this group! I have done some good hikes with the REI but I would love to know more about this one. For instance, how long you think it would take and how much water should we bring. Filters, food, etc. thanks!!

    October 20, 2013

    • Rob R.

Sounds good Wayne. I suggest we just meet at the parking area at Mono Meadow trailhead. I'll send out an email tomorrow night. Any suggestion for a backup? This will probably be a one day climb if we go Saturday and start at Mono Meadow instead of the Valley. I may stay and do another on Sunday.

      October 29, 2013

    • Rob R.

Paul, as I mentioned above if we start at Mono Meadow, it will be a one day climb with a relatively early start and back before dark. Ilouette Creek will be running adjacent to us but not sure how much water it will have - I'm not real familiar with this area. I'm going to bring 3 liters and dump what I dont need on the hike in if the creek is running. Bring an average lunch if you wish to enjoy it at the summit (if not too cold). Snacks otherwise are fine. I'll send an email out tomorrow night.

Sorry guys! I couldn't get the day off from work. I'll have to try some other time!
I'll keep on trying but I don't want to cancel at the last minute. Have fun!

  • Rob R.

I will be off work at 1 on Friday. Any preferences on departure time and a meeting spot?
