Jacks and Dicks Peak - Desolation

REVISED:

The snow is falling - time for some winter fun! We'll hike in from the Eagle Lakes trailhead and camp between Dicks Lake and Fontanillis Lake.  Sunday morning, we'll climb over Dicks Pass and traverse the ridgeline to Dicks Peak, then continue on the ridge to summit Jacks Peak. We'll then turn around and hike back to Dicks Peak and either retrace our steps or follow the ridgeline down to the west side of Dicks Lake.  We'll then pack up and hike out the same route to the Eagle Lakes Trailhead

This is a private member-organized event unaffiliated with SMC.

Thanks everyone - this turned out to be a GREAT trip!
Plus... I scored on gear! I found the owner of a pair of snowshoes (or he found me), but I still have a pair of yellow Trangos, a pair of trekking poles, and a water bottle.

Yup, those would be mine. Let me know when I can grab them from you. Thanks. Merry Christmas

It was great meeting everyone (even though my climb was short). I look forward to getting out with you guys again.

This turned out to be a great year-end trip! More snow that expected and it ended with pizza and beer.

    • Rick B.

      And Electric Sex? Great pic!

      December 23, 2013

  • David

This was a great overnight hiking and climbing trip. There was more snow than expected which added the experience. The weather was great and it was only windy on the ridge. Thanks Rob for putting this one on.

Anyone bringing bear can? I was going to leave mine behind this time, but after googling hibernating bears I'm not sure anymore...

    December 20, 2013

    • Rob R.

Nah...I've never used one in this area.

      December 20, 2013

  • Rick B.

Rob, I really want to go, but it wouldn't be prudent with the cold I've got. Let me know if you need stove or tent, I could bring it to the meetup spot.

    December 20, 2013

  • David

Is anyone coming from the elk grove area? I could use a ride. Thanks.

Sorry I have to bail out. The person that was going to help my wife with the new born baby had to back out, so I need to stay home and help her out.

congrats. i know how that goes. My guy was born on Oct 10th.

PS, it gets better, he slept 7 hours last night

So there is very little new snow if any. I'm not planning on bringing a harness or ropes. I am going to bring an axe and crampons. I have not traversed the ridgeline between Jacks and Dicks so am unsure exactly what to expect. Anyone done this before - are harnesses or ropes needed at all? Bring your snowshoes - we may be able to posthole through some of it but shoes will make it easier based upon my hike at Carson Pass last weekend. Heidi - how about meeting us at around 7:45 at the Eagle Lakes Trailhead. Anyone have any last questions?

    December 20, 2013

    • Marek B.

Me and Art did a Tallac-Dicks-to-Jacks in 2011 and I would classify it as a hike. There might have been some scrambling, but we definitely didn't encounter anything warranting a rope. Here's some pics from that trip: https://plus.google.co...

im bringing axe and crampons. ill bring the snowshoes but probably leave them in the car. no rope/harness

Make sure you have good stakes / deadmen anchors for your tents.

      December 20, 2013

  • Stefan

Hey guys! I really want to join on this one but don't have a tent and REI doesn't rent them out anymore. Does anyone have extra room?

    December 17, 2013

      Sweet! Thanks a lot everyone.

Meeting at Starbucks on Saturday at 6AM in Folsom, right?

    December 19, 2013

  • David

Rick are you sure about the tents? Last I countered there were 5 tents for 14 people. I think we still need two more tents.

    December 17, 2013

    • Marek B.

I will bring two 2-person tents in case we need extra

      December 19, 2013

    • Chris C.

If needed I will bring a 2 person tent, otherwise I'll bivy sack it. Let me know. Looking forward to getting outside!

I was moved to "Yes" for the event but unfortunately I live too far to make arrangement on a short notice :( I would love, love to go though. Maybe next time. I backpacked at this area back in September: gorgeous and scenic area!

  • David

rob, I can pick up the extra permit, where did you get yours at?

    December 18, 2013

    • Rob R.

I got it online at recreation.gov. just Google desolation permit. The area is "Dicks" when asked what region. Let me know if you have any problems.

      December 18, 2013

    • David

      Good to go on permits.

      1 · December 18, 2013

Sorry to miss this, Rob, but I'll be teaching the CPR class on Sunday.

    December 18, 2013

  • Rob R.

Depending upon our need, I can borrow a couple 3 person tents from SMC. We will still require 4 2-person tents. Please decide who you want to share a tent with and contact them. Then, post who will bring the tent so we have a running inventory. David, can you bring your 2.5qt pot and stove. I have a dragonfly and large pot as well so I'll bring mine. We could use at least one more due to the group size, possibly two. If you prefer to bring your own small stove, please let me know.

I have not traveled into Jacks/Dicks in the winter. The conditions are always uncertain. If heavy snowfall is present within a few days, avalanche danger may exist and I would recommend a beacon. I will be wearing mine. Please know how to use it if you carry one. We could always go over Beacon use in camp the evening before the climb.

    December 6, 2013

    • Marek B.

I will be carrying a 2-person tent and share with Kimiora. I'm happy to bring a stove and fuel; that would cover additional 2-3 people.

      December 8, 2013

    • Rob R.

I think one or two shovels will suffice. There isn't much snow but there are areas where it has collected up to two feet. Also, there's a possibility of more tomorrow but very little from what I last heard.

      December 18, 2013

  • Rob R.

The permit for overnight in Desolation is $5 per person. I already purchased one for the maximum group size of 12. Would someone else consider purchasing another for 2 people and we'll occupy two separate sites with two separate groups (so that we remain within the quota rules). Please post here if you are willing to purchase. I waited thinking that a few would drop out being the weekend before Christmas but looks like we're hanging in there. Also, if everyone else would bring an extra five dollars to help cover the cost of the permit, that would be much appreciated.

I have to drop out; strained a calf muscle and still hobbling down the stairs.

Sorry about the last minute pull out. I am a bit unprepare for this trip. Have a great one!

    December 16, 2013

Is anyone skiing/snowboarding? It is a great area for it. The avalanche report is low above treeline and moderate near treeline and below. The NW-N-NE aspects on slopes 32 degrees and steeper due to ongoing persistent slab instability

    December 16, 2013

    • Rob R.

There's not much snow out there David. I was at Carson Pass (Elephants Back) last weekend and there is exposed rocks and shrub in many places.

      December 16, 2013

  • Rob R.

So far, we have 5 2-person tents: myself (Rob), David, Marek, Eric and Rick B. That covers ten people. We still need two more people to bring a 2person tent. In regards to Stoves: Marek, Eric, Rick B and David. That should cover us. We need to be sure we have plenty of fuel - it's only one overnight but 3 people per stove on average.

For Pots, it looks like David and I will bring one. We will probably need at least one more decent sized pot to melt snow for water.

As for carpooling - we can determine that at Starbucks in the morning - Folsom. I know David and Heidi are coming from Reno. Is there anyone else that won't be meeting us at Starbucks?

    December 10, 2013

    • David

I can bring a 2 person tent and a pot.

      December 10, 2013

    • Eric

My stove is a little bulky and not ideal in winter so if anyone has a better one, that'd be perfect. I can still bring mine if needed though.

      December 11, 2013

  • David

We need to distinguish between Davids. :)

    December 10, 2013

  • Rick B.

I can bring 4 season 2 person tent, cookset, stove, and shovel.

    December 8, 2013

  • David

We should figure out who has what so we're not all brining extra weight. I have a two man 4season tent, a whisper light, and a large 2.5+qt pot. I haven't done these peaks before so do we need avi beacons, is it ski able, mtn axe or will trecking poles work, crampons? I also have a aid kit with a Sam splint. I'm also thinking shovels are a must. what else have we got and still need?

Wayne has suggested hiking in via Eagle Lakes trailhead and setting up BaseCamp near Dicks Lake. This would cut a few miles off the approach and will bring us by Maggies Peaks which we could bag if anyone is interested. Any preferences - I'm open.

It might be interesting to go via Eagle Lakes since that goes near where our SIG 2 courses will be held and a chance to scout terrain. So that is a plus for me.

      November 20, 2013

  • Marissa T.

Looks like fun... What SIG and MNT experience levels would this event be appropriate for?

    Thanks!

Rob - that is correct. Meetup-member organized trips are unaffiliated with the club and outside of the club's oversight. Also, for that reason, skill signoffs don't occur on these non-club trips.

    • Marissa T.

Gotcha, makes sense. Thanks for the clarification!
