Intro to Mountaineering

Introduction to Mountaineering at Castle Peak. Join us for two days of instruction and climbing. We'll demonstrate and practice roped climbing on rock and snow, fixed lines, rappelling, and mountaineering campcraft. Camping and climbing is easy to get to and all are welcome, no limit on RSVPs. Come for one or both days to learn the basics of mountaineering or just brush up your skills. RSVPS will open Nov. 1 at 8:00pm.

How RSVPs work: Prospective members who have joined on Meetup but not yet paid for any membership may attend one event for free. Beyond this, you must be a current member to RSVP. All events open for RSVP at 8:00pm approximately three weeks prior. RSVPs are first-come first-served and are subject to event organizer review and final approval. All attendees must be SMG members or be prospective members on their free trip, and all participants must meet the pre-requisites. Prospective members will still need to sign the SMG Waiver / Assumption of Risk and provide emergency contact information to attend. Please provide the required information when you RSVP. Because this event occurs on public lands it is open to the public.

Not an official SMG member yet? Join the club here.

ITINERARY

Friday, November 23rd:

Meetup at the posted Roseville Eureka Park and Ride for carpooling in the SMG van, (capacity 12) or private vehicles, or you can meet us at the Sno-Park at the Castle Peak / Boreal exit off I-80 at 9:30 am. Park as close to the Boreal Inn as you can. You will need a Sno-Park pass which you can get at the Boreal Inn, or from REI.

We'll gather at the Sno-Park around 9:30 am to meet and greet, sort out gear and logistics, then make the one mile walk to the Castle Peak meadow. Snowshoes or skis may be needed for this event. We'll set up camp in a prominent location just inside the trees on the northwest (left) side of the meadow near the stream, and get ready for climbing.

Instruction will begin with an introduction to snow climbing, focusing on crampon and ice axe techniques. Then we'll progress to roped team climbing, and along the way address mountaineering clothing, equipment and gear. If there is enough snow we can work on self-arrrest technique. Instruction will be held on the slopes of Castle Peak, about a 30-minute hike from camp. We'll also review mountaineering campcraft and field general questions about mountaineering that evening. This may be combined with an ascent of Castle Peak via the West Ridge. That evening we'll enjoy a fine meal together and make plans for tomorrow.

Saturday, November 24th:

All should meet in camp at 8:00am whether you've stayed the night or are coming in that day. We'll split into different teams based on ability and ascend easy mixed snow and rock routes on the West Ridge, Central Couloir, and Southwest Slopes routes to the summit block. Once there, we'll provide instruction on rock climbing, using a fixed line to obtain the summit, followed by an exciting rappell off the backside. We'll provide instruction until all are satisfied, then return to break down camp and walk back to the cars arriving around 4:30 pm. We should be returning to the Roseville Eureka Park and Ride around 6:00 pm.

Hey Scott - That's it. I use a reflector with it also so it shines more of the light down...

I sent out a preliminary email a few days ago, hope you all got it. We've just gotten quite a bit more snow this weekend up there. It looks as though conditions are going to be quite ideal. I am looking forward to it. As a matter of fact, I'm already packed. How's that for an indicator...
